The women's 400 metres hurdles event at the 1983 Pan American Games was held in Caracas, Venezuela on 23 and 24 August. [1] [2] This was the first time that the event was held at the Games.

The Pan American Games is a continental multi-sport event in the Americas featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The competition is held among athletes from nations of the Americas, every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games. It is the second oldest continental games in the world. The only Winter Pan American Games were held in 1990. In 2021, the Junior Pan American Games was held for the first time specifically for young athletes.
