Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation

The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (also known as the Belt and Road Forum or BRFIC) [1] is an international political and economic forum of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Contents

The forum will be a platform for working out action plans for implementation of the initiative in the areas of infrastructure, energy and resources, production capacity, trade and investment and identification of major projects. [2] It is also intended to be an opportunity for the signing of cooperation agreements with countries and international organizations in the areas of financial cooperation mechanism; a cooperation platform for science, technology and environmental protection; and enhanced exchanges and training of talent and financing agreements for backing projects. [2]

2017

The first event was on 14 and 15 May 2017 in Beijing, and drew 29 foreign heads of state and government and representatives from more than 130 countries and 70 international organizations. [3] [4]

The purpose of the forum is described by Wang Xiaotao, deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission, in an interview with Xinhua as building "a more open and efficient international cooperation platform; a closer, stronger partnership network; and to push for a more just, reasonable and balanced international governance system." [2] Western media coverage portrayed the forum in a similar way with CNN referring to the event under the headline "China's new world order" and the Los Angeles Times running the article "Globalization 2.0: How China's two-day summit aims to shape a new world order". 2019

A second Belt and Road Forum was held from 25 to 27 April 2019 in Beijing. [1] Thirty-seven heads of state attended the second BRFIC, as did about five thousand other representatives. [7]

The second forum identified 283 projects, agreements, or initiatives proceeding under the BRI. [8] :60

During the second forum, China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment established the BRI International Green Development Coalition as a joint project with the environmental agencies of twenty-five other countries. [8] :60

2023

A third forum was held on 17-19 October, 2023. [9]

The participating countries include almost 75% of the world's population and account for more than half of the world's GDP.

The 2017 SCO summit was the 17th annual summit of heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held between 7 - 10 June in Astana, Kazakhstan. The upgrading of the membership of India and Pakistan to full members was one of the major topics, beside from security related topics, the Belt and Road Initiative and economic cooperation.

Cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries is an initiative by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote business and investment relations between China and 14 countries of Central and Eastern Europe : Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Prior to their 2022 withdrawal, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania were members of the initiative.

The Belt and Road News Network (BRNN), is a Beijing-based news media association announced by General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping in May 2017 at the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The network was officially launched in April 2019 and chaired by the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. According to a 2020 report by Asia Society, the BRNN exists "to disseminate favorable content, host all-expenses-paid workshops, and serve as a centralized source of information on BRI. The network predictably frames the BRI and China in a positive light and has member media outlets in more than 26 countries."

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Community of Common Destiny</span> Chinese Communist Party policy

Community of common destiny for mankind, officially translated as community with a shared future for mankind or human community with a shared future, is a political slogan used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to describe a stated foreign-policy goal of the People's Republic of China. The phrase was first used by former CCP General Secretary Hu Jintao and has been frequently cited by current General Secretary Xi Jinping. As the term's usage in English has increased, "shared future" has become more frequently used than "common destiny," as the latter arguably implies a predetermined path. The phrase was included in the CCP Constitution in 1997, and the preamble of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China when the Constitution was amended in 2018.

The China–Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF) is a formal dialogue initiative between China and the Arab League established in 2004. It serves as the primary multilateral coordination mechanism between China and the Arab states.

The China–Central Asia–West Asia Economic Corridor is an economic and transportation corridor of the Belt and Road Initiative, a global economic connectivity program led by China. The corridor was one of the 6 land corridors articulated in the initial vision for the BRI in 2015. It has since the 2nd Belt and Road Forum in 2019 become one of 35 corridors and project officially included in the BRI.
