A small farming village situated 10 miles (16 km) south of Saint-Omer, at the D157 and D158 crossroads, by the banks of the river Lys.

It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. It consisted of 18 communes, which joined the canton of Fruges in 2015. It had a total of 9,931 inhabitants (2012).
