The decline of fishing in general and of the local population has caused the village to dwindle. Its post office was consolidated with the Swans Island post office.
Little Deer Isle is an island in Penobscot Bay, lying just north of the town of Deer Isle, of which it is a part. The island is served by Maine State Route 15 via the Deer Isle Bridge. The north end of the island is called Eggemoggin and there is a small island with a lighthouse on it at the tip called Pumpkin Island. Little Deer is about 4 miles long and connects to Deer Isle by way of a causeway. There are only about 300 year-round residents of Little Deer, but many more summer residents.

It is part of the Fish River watershed, draining north to the Saint John River and ultimately southeast to the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada.

The Stillwater River is an 11.5-mile-long (18.5 km) side channel of the Penobscot River in Maine. From its source in Old Town, the Stillwater runs 2.3 miles (3.7 km) northwest along the northeast side of Orson Island, the site of the Penobscot Indian Reservation. It then runs 9.2 miles (14.8 km) south along the west sides of Orson and Marsh islands, over three dammed falls. The stream rejoins the main stem of the Penobscot in Orono.

Approximately 14 mi (23 km) long, its southern boundaries are set by Swan's Island and Placentia Island at its entrance; the town of Blue Hill lies at the far end. Morgan Bay, Union River Bay, and Western Bay empty into it. Long Island in the north of the bay is the largest uninhabited island in Maine.
