The Deputy Chief Minister of Penang are the second-highest executive officials of Penang, just next to the chief minister. Penang is also the only Malaysian state which appoints two Deputy Chief Ministers - one representing the Malay community and the other an ethnic Indian. [1] This serves to shape a top leadership consisting of various backgrounds, representing the diverse ethnicities of the state.

History

After the Independence of Malaysia in 1957, the deputy chief minister never created until Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) take over Penang in 1969, it was held by Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan). After Gerakan joined Barisan Nasional, it was held by its component party United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) to represent of Malay Community, the post of chief minister was held by Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (GERAKAN) due to Penang population were majority Chinese. The 2008 general election which saw BN in Penang collapse. The new Pakatan Rakyat chief minister Lim Guan Eng appointed two deputy chief minister, one is represent of Malay Community and one is represent of ethnic Indian. [1] Ramasamy was elected to the Malaysian Parliament and Penang State Legislative Assembly in the 2008 election, defeating former Chief Minister of Penang Koh Tsu Koon. [2] He became Deputy Chief Minister of Penang II after the election, serving under the new Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, making him the first person of Indian origin to hold the post of deputy chief minister in any Malaysian state. [3] In August 2023, Jagdeep Singh Deo succeeded to the post. [4]

He served as Member of the Penang State Executive Council (EXCO) in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) state administrations under former Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng from March 2008 to his promotion to Chief Ministership in May 2018, MP for Tanjong from November 1999 to May 2013 and again from May 2018 to November 2022 and the MLA for Pengkalan Kota from October 1990 to April 1995. He is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the PH and formerly PR coalitions. He has also served as the State Chairman of PH and DAP of Penang since May 2019 as well as the National Vice Chairman of DAP since September 2004. He is presently the only non-Muslim and Chinese head of state government among the 13 Malaysian states.

The Love Malaysia Party is a Malaysian political party formed in August 6, 2009. Its members include former Gerakan vice-president and Member of Parliament Huan Cheng Guan, and former Sarawak State Assembly independent member for Ngemah seat; Gabriel Adit Demong. The National Alliance is a far-right political coalition composed of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party, Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, Malaysian People's Movement Party, Sabah Progressive Party, and Malaysian Indian People's Party. This coalition was preceded by the Malaysian Party Alliance Association, also known as the Persatuan Perikatan Parti Malaysia (PPPM). The United for the Rights of Malaysians Party is a Malaysian political party. It was founded by former Deputy Chief Minister of Penang Ramasamy Palanisamy after he left the Democratic Action Party (DAP). The party has yet to be registered by the country's Registrar of Societies. Pending legalisation, interim party chairman Ramsamy has referred to the party as "movement to defend the rights of the people, especially the non-Malays." Despite being Indian-focused, Ramasamy has asserted that it would be open to all ethnic groups, but has said he would not refer to it as "multi-racial like other political parties."
