The 1964 Ealing Council election took place on 7 May 1964 to elect members of Ealing London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour party gained control of the council. [1]

Ealing London Borough Council

Ealing London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Ealing in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in the United Kingdom capital of London.

London Capital of the United Kingdom

London is the capital and largest city of both England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames in the south-east of England, at the head of its 50-mile (80 km) estuary leading to the North Sea, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. Londinium was founded by the Romans. The City of London, London's ancient core − an area of just 1.12 square miles (2.9 km2) and colloquially known as the Square Mile − retains boundaries that follow closely its medieval limits. The City of Westminster is also an Inner London borough holding city status. Greater London is governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

The Labour Party is a centre-left political party in the United Kingdom which has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The party's platform emphasises greater state intervention, social justice and strengthening workers' rights.

Background

These elections were the first to the newly formed borough. Previously elections had taken place in the Municipal Borough of Acton, Municipal Borough of Ealing and Municipal Borough of Southall. These boroughs were joined to form the new London Borough of Ealing by the London Government Act 1963.

Municipal Borough of Acton

Acton was a local government district in Middlesex, England from 1865 to 1965.

Municipal Borough of Ealing

Ealing was a local government district from 1863 to 1965 around the town of Ealing which formed part of the built up area of London until 1965, where it officially became part of Greater London.

Municipal Borough of Southall

Southall was a local government district in the county of Middlesex, United Kingdom from 1891 to 1965. It consisted of the civil parish of Norwood.

A total of 177 candidates stood in the election for the 60 seats being contested across 20 wards. These included a full slate from the Conservative and Labour parties, while the Liberals stood 42 candidates. Other candidates included 8 from the Communist party, 6 from the British National party and 1 Independent. All wards were three-seat wards.

This election had aldermen as well as directly elected councillors. Labour got all 10 aldermen.

The Council was elected in 1964 as a "shadow authority" but did not start operations until 1 April 1965.

Election result

The results saw Labour gain the new council with a majority of 8 after winning 34 of the 60 seats. Overall turnout in the election was 45.1%. This turnout included 1,350 postal votes.
