George Briner died on 9 September 1920. [36] Between 1920 and 1927 the Legislative Assembly was elected using a form of proportional representation with multi-member seats and a single transferable vote (modified Hare-Clark). There was confusion at the time as to the process to be used to fill the vacancy. When George Beeby resigned on 9 August 1920, in accordance with the practice prior to 1920, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly issued a writ of election requiring a by-election to be conducted, however the Chief Electoral Officer said he couldn't do so under then law at the time and that a by-election would be contrary to the principle of proportional representation. [37] The vacancies were left unfilled until the Parliament passed the Parliamentary Elections (Casual Vacancies) Act on 10 December 1920, [38] so that casual vacancies were filled by the next unsuccessful candidate on the incumbent member's party list. Theodore Hill was the unsuccessful Progressive candidate at the 1920 election and took his seat on 15 December 1920. [39]

Hastings and Macleay was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales from 1894 to 1920. It was created with the division of the two-member electorate of Hastings and Manning. In 1920 proportional representation was introduced and Hastings and Macleay was absorbed into the new four-member district of Oxley. The electorate was named after the Hastings and Macleay Rivers, the alluvial valleys of which contained most of its population.
Raleigh was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, originally created in 1894, partly replacing Macleay, and named after Raleigh County. In 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation, it was absorbed into Oxley, along with Gloucester. It was recreated in 1927 and abolished in 1981 and partly replaced by Coffs Harbour.
Members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly who served in the 25th parliament of New South Wales held their seats from 1920 to 1922. They were elected at the 1920 state election on 20 March 1920. The Speaker was Daniel Levy with the exception of 13–20 December 1921 when he was replaced by Simon Hickey.
Vaucluse, an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, has had one incarnation from its creation in 1927 until the present.
Wakehurst, an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, has had one incarnation, from 1962 until the present.
North Shore, an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, has had two incarnations, the first from 1920 to 1927 as a five-member electorate, the second from 1981 to the present as a single-member electorate.
Wollondilly, an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, has had two incarnations, the first from 1904 to 1981 and the second from 2007 to the present. It returned 3 members between 1920 and 1927.
Sydney, an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, has had two incarnations, the first from 1920 to 1927 as a five-member electorate, the second from 2007 to the present as a single-member electorate.
Balmain, an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, has had three incarnations since it was established in 1880. It expanded from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 members before being abolished in 1894. It was re-established in 1904 returning 1 member until 1920.
