Grand Central (formerly The Pallasades Shopping Centre, previously Birmingham Shopping Centre) is a shopping centre located above New Street railway station in Birmingham, England, that opened in 1971 as Birmingham Shopping Centre. In 1989, it was largely refurbished and reopened on 17 September 1990 as The Pallasades Shopping Centre. The centre underwent a mass redevelopment in 2014, opening on 24 September 2015 as Grand Central. It is currently[ when? ] owned by Hammerson and CPPIB, having been acquired from Birmingham City Council in January 2016 for £335m. [1] When coupled with the Bullring (to which it is connected via a footbridge, branded as "LinkStreet") it forms the United Kingdom's largest city centre-based shopping centre, styled Bullring & Grand Central.
The original centre was built in 1971 as part of the reconstruction of New Street Station below. It was known as the Birmingham Shopping Centre before being renamed The Pallasades.
As part of the New Street Station Gateway Plus redevelopment, Grand Central underwent a major overhaul, which included a six-year long programme of enabling works by a Birmingham demolition contractor, Colemans, formerly Coleman & Co. The mall has been redesigned with a Texlon ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) [2] atrium roof as centrepiece, and it has over 60 stores across 500,000 square feet (46,000 m2) with John Lewis as the main tenant. Many of the shops, restaurants and cafés are new to the city including Cath Kidston, The White Company, Kiehls, Giraffe and Tapas Revolution. It reopened in September 2015 along with the modernised Birmingham New Street station. [3]

John Lewis announced in 2020 that its store would not reopen after being closed during the COVID-19 restrictions.

Bull Street tram stop is a tram stop on the West Midlands Metro tram system serving Bull Street in the Birmingham city centre, England. Construction started in June 2012, and it was opened on 6 December 2015, becoming the first stop of the city-centre extension to open, and the first on-street tram stop to operate in Birmingham since the closure of the Birmingham Corporation Tramways in 1953, and the temporary southern terminus of the service. The rest of the extension to Grand Central was opened on 30 May 2016, and then onto Edgbaston Village in July 2022. Work started on a new line to Birmingham Moor Street in 2022 which will be gradually extended to the eventual terminus at Birmingham Airport. To allow for the new connection to be made it became necessary to temporarily terminate all trams at Bull Street.

Paradise, formerly named Paradise Circus, is the name given to an area of approximately 7 hectares in Birmingham city centre between Chamberlain and Centenary Squares. The area has been part of the civic centre of Birmingham, England since the 19th century when it contained buildings such as the Town Hall, Mason Science College, Birmingham and Midland Institute buildings and Central Library. The site was redeveloped from 1960 to 1975 into the present Paradise Circus based within a roundabout on the Inner Ring Road system containing a new Central Library and School of Music. From 2015, Argent Group will redevelop the area into new mixed use buildings and public squares.
The Birmingham station group is a station group of three railway stations in Birmingham city centre, consisting of New Street, Moor Street, and Snow Hill. The station group is printed on national railway tickets as BIRMINGHAM STNS and does not include the international station of Birmingham International, which is located some 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) east of the city centre next to Birmingham Airport and National Exhibition Centre.
