Contents

About 13 cm (5.1 in) long, hanging parrots are mostly green plumaged and short-tailed. Often head coloring helps to identify individual species. [1] They are unique among birds for their ability to sleep upside down. [2]

Taxonomy

The genus Loriculus was introduced in 1849 by the English zoologist Edward Blyth for the blue-crowned hanging parrot. [3] [4] The name is a diminutive of the genus Lorius that was introduced by Nicholas Aylward Vigors for the lorys in 1825. [5]

Fifteen species are recognised: [6]

Galloperdix Genus of birds

Galloperdix is a genus of three species of bird in the pheasant family, Phasianidae. These terrestrial birds are restricted to the Indian Subcontinent, with the red spurfowl and painted spurfowl in forest and scrub in India, and the Sri Lanka spurfowl in forests of Sri Lanka. They share the common name "spurfowl" with the members of the genus Pternistis which are widely distributed in Africa.

Psittacula Genus of birds

Members of the parrot genus Psittacula or Afro-Asian ring-necked parrots, as they are commonly known in aviculture, originate from Africa to South-East Asia. It is a widespread group with a clear concentration of species in south Asia, but also with representatives in Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean. This is the only genus of parrot which has the majority of its species in continental Asia. Of all the extant species only Psittacula calthropae, Psittacula caniceps and Psittacula echo do not have a representative subspecies in any part of mainland continental Asia. The rose-ringed parakeet, Psittacula krameri, is one of the most widely distributed of all parrots.

While it is listed as Least Concern in IUCN, some subspecies, such as L. p. chyrsonotus of Cebu and L. p. siquijorensis of Siquijor, may already be extinct. The species is threatened by habitat loss, but a bigger threat is trapping for the illegal wildlife trade; wild-caught birds are often sold as pets in streets and online selling groups.
