Hickory Hill is a middle-class, predominantly African American community in the southeast region of Memphis, Tennessee, United States.

History

In the 1950s, Hickory Hill was a rural community just southeast of Memphis, with some paved roads and less than a 1,000 homes were available in the area. [1]

Geography

The neighborhood is bounded on the north by where Bill Morris Parkway (385) meets Kirby, and the community of Fox Meadows (or Winchester Road), on the east by Riverdale Road, on the south by Holmes Road and Shelby Drive, and on the west by Mendenhall Road and/or the community of Parkway Village.

Demographics

The neighborhood experienced a dramatic demographic change after being annexed by the city of Memphis on Thursday, December 31, 1998. According to the Census Bureau, the Black population increased dramatically by more than 450 percent between 1990 and 2000. The white population dropped 50 percent over this same period. The Hispanic population in Hickory Hill has increased nearly 700 percent over the past decade. According to the 2010 Census the two zip codes 38141 and 38115 that make up Hickory Hill were both 80% Black, 10% to 11% Hispanic (mostly Mexican), 8% White and 1% Asian. [2] [3] The median income for zip code 38141 was $56,000 and the mean income was $60,672. For 38115 zip code The median income was $34,603 and the mean income was $47,369. The percentage adults in Hickory Hill with a high school education is higher than either the city or the county by 5-10 percent. More than one in four adults have a bachelor's degree or higher which is equal to the county rate and higher than the city rate.

Eads is an unincorporated community in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States, named after Civil War engineer James Buchanan Eads. Some parts of Eads have been annexed by the city of Memphis. Some of its area is currently still unincorporated. Eads is located north of Collierville, west of Somerville, east of Memphis and Bartlett. The Eads zip code (38028) stretches into both Shelby County and Fayette County, including parts of Hickory Withe and Fisherville. Major roads in the community include Winfield Dunn Parkway, U.S. Route 64, Collierville-Arlington Road/Airline Road, and Seward Road.

Parkway Village is a predominantly African-American community in southeast Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Parkway Village is bounded by Getwell Road and Lamar Avenue on the West, Winchester Road on the South, I-240 on the North, and Mendenhall Road on the East. The former Mall of Memphis was in the Parkway Village community.

Greenbriar is a middle-class neighborhood of southwestern Atlanta, Georgia. Greenbriar is a long strip along the east side of the Perimeter (I-285) stretching from Langford Parkway to just south of Stone Road. It is bordered by Atlanta's "Southwest" neighborhood across Langford Parkway to the north, Ben Hill Forest across the Perimeter to the west, and by the city of East Point on the east and south.

Southwind is an unincorporated and gated community located on the southeastern portion of Shelby County, Tennessee, United States, and part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Since the area is a part of Shelby County, it sits unincorporated on the southeast boundary of the Memphis city limits, in the Memphis annexation reserve area. The area's boundaries are one section of the 38125 zip code bounded by Winchester Road, Germantown, and Hacks Cross Road and include the PGA Tour Southwind golf course - TPC Southwind, home of The World Golf Championship. According to the 2010 census, the Southwind area population was 36,150, with 75% African American, 4% Asian, 15% Non-Hispanic White, and 6% Hispanic. The majority of households with children residing in them had both a father and mother in the home. For families in Southwind the median income was $72,587 and the mean income was $85,975.
