The MATA Trolley is a heritage streetcar transit system in Memphis, Tennessee. It began operating on April 29, 1993. [1] Service was suspended in June 2014, following fires on two cars. [7] After nearly four years and repeated postponements, the reopening of the Main Street Line took place on April 30, 2018, [8] while the system's two other lines remained suspended (still as of 2024), but with reopening of both planned. [5] [9] However, all service was suspended again in August 2024 in response to a recommendation by the state department of transportation after an issue arose with braking of the trolley cars. [3] [10] In 2023, the system had a ridership of 365,400.

The last line of Memphis’ original streetcar network closed on June 15, 1947. [2]

Since opening the system has been extended twice and by 2004 consisted of three lines, operated by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA). These lines are the Main Street Line, the Riverfront Loop and the Madison Avenue Line; however, service on the last two lines remains indefinitely suspended in May 2024. [9] In the 2011–12 fiscal year, 1.34 million trips were made on the system, a 23.1% year-on-year growth  the highest of any light rail system in the contiguous United States. [11]

History

Originally proposed as a 4.9-mile (7.9 km) line along the Mississippi River, the Memphis City Council voted 9-4 in January 1990 to build the 2.5-mile (4 km), $33 million Main Street route. [12] After multiple delays, construction of the line commenced in February 1991 for completion by December 1992. [13] However, due to the longer-than-anticipated restoration of the vintage streetcars, the opening of the line was delayed until spring 1993. [14] After further delay, testing of the first of the restored cars began on March 10, 1993, [15] and the system opened to the public on April 29, 1993. [2] [12] [16]

On October 1, 1997, the Riverfront line opened. [17] The system's third line, running east from Main Street along Madison Avenue for about 2 miles (3.2 km), opened on March 15, 2004. It was completed at a cost of about $56 million, which was approximately 25 percent below the original budget forecast for the project. [18] The Main Street Line was extended to Memphis Central Station in February 2021. [19]

On November 3, 2021, MATA announced a plan to test a modern streetcar from San Diego on the Madison Avenue Line, on which rail service has been suspended since 2014. [20] The vehicle is light rail car 1035 from the San Diego Trolley light rail system. MATA acquired the 1988-built Siemens–Duewag U2 from San Diego in fall 2020, and the car arrived in Memphis in April 2021. [21]

Trolley operation on all three lines was suspended from 2014 to 2018 following fires in two trolley cars, and in 2018 service resumed on the Main Street Line only. [8] However, on August 18, 2024, all service was suspended again, MATA citing brake problems on the cars. [3] A reopening of the system will not occur in the near future, as all trolley operators were laid off the same day. [10]

The trolleys used are almost all restored, vintage streetcars. [12] The original three cars in operation on opening day were all formerly used in Porto, Portugal, and are Car 187, circa 1927; Car 194, circa 1935; and Car 204, circa 1940. [12] These cars are each 30 feet 6 inches (9.3 m) long, 7 feet 10 inches (2.39 m) wide and weigh 25,820 pounds (11,710 kg) without passengers. The cars were restored by Kerns-Wilcheck Associates of Memphis. [12] Three additional ex-Porto cars (156, 164 and 180) joined them within weeks, and the fleet had six cars (all ex-Porto single-truckers) by May 1993. [22]

Between the mid-1990s and 2003, the fleet expanded considerably in both number and capacity with the arrival of ten reconditioned Melbourne, Australia W2-class cars, all but one (Car 417) supplied by Gomaco Trolley Company. [23] Other additions were single-truck Car 1979 that was built new by Gomaco in 1993, as a demonstrator; [24] double-truck Car 1794 that was originally an open-sided car from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was heavily rebuilt and enclosed before entering service in Memphis, and, in early 2004, a replica Birney Safety Car – again, manufactured by Gomaco, [25] similar to those used on the TECO Line Streetcar in Tampa, Florida, and the Metro Streetcar in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The fleet and overhead wires were converted from trolley pole to pantograph current collection in early 2003, during a three-month suspension of service which started on January 5, 2003. [26]

An eleventh reconditioned Melbourne car, W5-class 799, was purchased in 2006 by MATA with a view toward eventual restarting of trolley service. [27] [28]

In late 2020, MATA acquired three more Gomaco-built replica Birney streetcars, secondhand from the Charlotte Area Transit System, which had used them from 2004 to 2019 on its Charlotte Trolley System and CityLynx Gold Line. [21] After a planned refurbishment, they are projected to enter service by late 2022. [21]

In 2021, MATA acquired one secondhand Siemens-Duewag U2 LRV from San Diego Trolley to be used for testing on the Madison Avenue Line. The vehicle began testing on the line in March 2022.

Lines

The MATA Trolley network consists of three lines. There are stations at 24 locations (inbound and outbound stations are counted as a single location), and 35 of the stations are sheltered and ADA-accessible. [29]

Accidents and incidents

On June 1, 2011, two trolleys a Melbourne W2-class and Porto number 194 traveling on Main Street collided due to a power failure. [31]

Two of the Melbourne cars caught fire, in December 2013 and April 2014. Both incidents occurred along the Madison Avenue line. In May 2014, the line was shut down in order to conduct an investigation, since the speeds along it are higher. On June 10, the suspension was expanded to include all MATA trolley lines after it was determined that much of the fleet would need to be renovated. At that time, the suspension was expected to last at least six months until a feasible solution could be found. Options included restoring the existing fleet at a cost of $6 million, or replacing them with new heritage streetcars at a cost of $40 million. [7] After thorough inspection of the fleet, MATA decided to overhaul several cars rather than purchase new ones, and to eventually reinstate service using only overhauled cars. [32] In December 2014, MATA announced that it was not yet able to give an estimated date for the resumption of service. [33] In March 2015, it was announced that limited trolley service might be possible in May or June, but there was still no timetable for full restoration of service. [34] In October 2016, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said trolleys would not be back in service before 2017. [35]

Reopening and resuspension

Service on the Main Street Line restarted April 30, 2018. [8] At that time, the other two lines were forecast to reopen within two years, [36] but as of December 2022 they both remained indefinitely suspended (routes served by buses). [5] In September 2021, MATA was predicting that the Riverfront Loop would reopen when three used Birney-replica cars acquired from Memphis in late 2020 were ready to enter service, which at the time was forecast for circa late 2022. [21] Service on the Madison Avenue Line is planned to be restored sometime after 2022 after the testing of the Siemens-Duewag U2 LRV on the line is completed and more vehicles are purchased. [37]

On August 18, 2024, MATA announced that all service (on the one operating line, Main Street) was suspended again indefinitely at the request of the Tennessee Department of Transportation after a braking issue arose, for the second time in nine months, while an investigation into the cause proceeded. [3] [10] As there was no estimate for when service might be able to resume, all trolley operators were laid off. [10]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Birney</span>

A Birney or Birney Safety Car is a type of streetcar that was manufactured in the United States in the 1910s and 1920s. The design was small and light and was intended to be an economical means of providing frequent service at a lower infrastructure and labor cost than conventional streetcars. Production of Birney cars lasted from 1915 until 1930, and more than 6,000 of the original, single-truck version were built. Several different manufacturers built Birney cars. The design was "the first mass-produced standard streetcar " in North America.

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is the public transportation provider for Memphis, Tennessee. It is one of the largest transit providers in the state of Tennessee; MATA transports customers in the City of Memphis and parts of Shelby County on fixed-route buses, paratransit vehicles, demand-responsive service, and the MATA Trolley system. The system is managed by a seven-member policy board appointed by the mayor and approved by the Memphis City Council. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 3,122,700.

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is the agency responsible for public transportation in the Charlotte metropolitan area. CATS operates bus and rail transit services in Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas. Established in 1999, CATS' bus and rail operations carry about 320,000 riders on an average week. CATS is governed by the Metropolitan Transit Commission and is operated as a department of the City of Charlotte. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 13,476,600, or about 44,100 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2024.

The Galveston Island Trolley is a heritage streetcar network in Galveston, Texas, United States. As of late 2006, the total network length was 6.8 miles (10.9 km) with 22 stations. The Galveston Island Trolley is operated by Island Transit. The rail system reopened in 2021, after having been out of service for 13 years following severe damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Subsequent to the 2008 closure, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Transit Administration agreed to fund repairs. In January 2017, a contract was approved to restore three of the trolleys at a cost of $3.8 million. At that time, the trolleys were expected to be ready to return to service in 2018, but the date was later postponed to 2019 and later to 2021. By November 2020, two reconditioned trolleys had returned to Galveston. The line reopened for service in October 2021, limited to three days a week for now.

The Main Street Line is a line of the Memphis Area Transit Authority trolley system. It began operations in 1993, becoming the first streetcar line to operate in Memphis since 1947. It runs for about 2 mi (3.2 km) along Main Street, with 14 stops in Downtown Memphis. The Main Street Line is concurrent with the Riverfront Loop for almost all of its length.

It is the longest of the system's three lines, though it is concurrent with the Main Street Line for about half of its length. Part of the line offers panoramic views of the Mississippi River from atop to the Chickasaw Bluffs.

The Madison Avenue Line is a line of the Memphis Area Transit Authority trolley system. The trolley line began operating in 2004, and cost $56 million to build. It consists of 2.2 mi (3.5 km) of double track along Madison Avenue with six stops stretching into Midtown Memphis. The line was built to connect the Main Street system to the Medical District just east of Downtown Memphis. Trolley service has been suspended since April 2014, after two trolley cars caught fire within a span of six months. Buses have been serving the line since then, but MATA plans to restore trolley operation to the line eventually.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Riverfront Streetcar Line</span>

The Riverfront Streetcar Line was a historic streetcar line in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was operated by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA). It was built along the east bank of the Mississippi River, in an area with many amenities catering to tourists. It opened August 14, 1988, making it the first new streetcar route in New Orleans in 62 years. The line ran for 2 miles (3.2 km) from Julia Street at the upper end of the New Orleans Convention Center to the downriver (far) end of the French Quarter at the foot of Esplanade Avenue. Unlike the other three lines, it traveled on an exclusive right-of-way, along the river levee beside New Orleans Belt Railway tracks, making it more akin to a light rail line. The line was regauged in 1997 from standard gauge to broad gauge. Officially, the Riverfront Line was designated Route 2 and is designated with a blue color on most RTA publications. In the aftermath of the Hard Rock Hotel collapse on Canal Street and with construction of the Four Seasons Hotel causing part of the line to be put out of service, the line was merged with the Loyola-UPT line in 2021 to create the Rampart–St. Claude Streetcar Line, designated as Route 49.
