Huntingdon is a lightly populated locality in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. [1] It is situated on the southern bank of the Ashburton River / Hakatere, south of Ashburton. Other nearby settlements include Willowby to the west, Wheatstone, Flemington, and Ashton to the south, and Wakanui to the east across the river.

Huntingdon is part of the Lake Hood rural settlement and the Eiffelton statistical area. [2]

Economy

The primary economic activity in Huntingdon has been agriculture, but the development of a watersports centre and an associated residential subdivision since 1987 has provided diversification.

Environment

Huntingdon is situated on the Canterbury Plains, just inland from the Pacific Ocean. A small lake, Lake Hood, is situated beside the Ashburton River / Hakatere. In 1987, a project to develop Lake Hood was founded, and it is now a significant public water recreation facility surrounded by Huntingdon Park. It hosts kayaking, rowing, and water skiing, augmented by walking trails through surrounding wetland. Residential development has been pursued around this facility, growing the population of Huntingdon. [3]

Transport

Huntingdon is off major transport routes. Both State Highway 1 and the Main South Line railway pass nearby to the northwest, through Tinwald and Winslow.

It features an eight lane rowing course and separate waterskiing and jet skiing areas, and is home to Water Ski Lake Hood. It is increasing in popularity for rowing, as it is not as susceptible to wind as the main South Island rowing venue, Lake Ruataniwha.

Valetta is a lightly populated locality in the mid-Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is located in an agricultural area on the southern side of the Ashburton River / Hakatere. Its name is a misspelling of Valletta, the capital of Malta.

The Hinds River is a river in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Its north and south branches drain the eastern flank of the Moorhouse Range, part of the Southern Alps, and their confluence is near Anama and Mayfield. The river then flows across the Canterbury Plains towards the Pacific Ocean, passing through the small town of Hinds along the way. In Hinds, State Highway 1 and the Main South Line railway cross the river. The river's mouth is located between the localities of Longbeach and Lowcliffe.

It has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports breeding colonies of the endangered black-billed gull.

It includes the Ashburton Lakes, such as Lake Heron and Lake Clearwater, popular tramping area Mount Somers / Te Kiekie, and Mount Hutt skifield. The closest town is Mount Somers.

The Rangitata Diversion Race or RDR is a combined irrigation and power generation scheme that diverts water from the Rangitata River to irrigate over 66,000 hectares of farmland in Mid-Canterbury, New Zealand. The RDR project was the first major river diversion in New Zealand, and the largest irrigation scheme in the country. It was originally constructed by the Public Works Department between 1937 and 1944. The main canal is 67 km long, 10 m wide and 3 m deep.

Mount Harper / Mahaanui is a mountain in Canterbury, New Zealand, within the foothills of the Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. The mountain is the tallest point of the Harper Range, which is separated from the nearby Ben Macleod and Tara Haoa ranges to the south by the Rangitata River, and from the Moorhouse Range to the east by the Pudding valley. A number of small lakes lie to the north of Mahaanui, most notably including Lake Clearwater.
