The Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID) is a public-funded, non-profit, autonomous institution dedicated to conducting policy research, advocacy, capacity-building, and outreach activities to foster the industrial transformation of India.

Contents

Registered on October 7, 1986, under the Indian Societies Registration Act 1860, ISID in 1988, became one of the institutions that are supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), (Government of India), through grants-in-aid. Since 2006, the Institute operates from its own well-appointed campus located in the Vasant Kunj Institutional Area in South Delhi.

ISID owes its origin to the vision and leadership of its founder, Late Prof S K Goyal.

ISID Campus

ISID activities are housed at three main buildings, Academic Block, Office Block and Conference Block, extending to approximately 200,000 sq. ft, sitting on a land with an extent of 1.5 hectares, in the Institutional Area of Vasant Kunj, in New Delhi. The campus is home to:

Library

The Library stocks an extensive collection of books, journals and reports in subjects such as industrial economics, foreign investment, employment and labour, media and corporate sector, including publications of GATT/WTO, Reserve Bank of India, World Bank, UNCTAD, CMIE (EIS), NSSO and CSO. It also stocks reports, policy statements, committee reports, plan documents, statistical sources, government acts, rules and guidelines and a collection of prospectuses of more than 6,000 companies. ISID Library maintains a digital database of CDs, films and online repository as well. It also subscribes to several journals and magazines.

The users of the library have access to JSTOR database, Elsevier Science Direct—Economics, Business and Finance, EconLit Full Text, Wiley-Blackwell Social Science and Humanities, CMIE Prowess, EPWRF On-line Data Series - 13 modules, SANSCO online annual reports and IMF e-library Statistics. It also provides user services such as reference queries, referrals, reprographics and inter-library loan.

ISID offers online referencing assistance [2] and in addition to that, has released a reference database on the subject in CD format, under the name, ISID Research Reference CD which contains index to articles, discussion notes, editorials, Union Budget Speeches, Sections of Economic Survey, key statistics on the Indian economy, Global Development Indicators, reports and website addresses of institutions and scientists. Out of the four academic departments, the Departments of Economics, Sociology and Geography come under the Faculty of Social Sciences, while the Department of Commerce comes under the Faculty of Commerce and Business Studies.

Bibek Debroy is an Indian economist, serving as the chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He is also the Chairman of the Finance Ministry's 'Expert Committee for Infrastructure Classification and Financing Framework for Amrit Kaal'. Debroy has made significant contributions to game theory, economic theory, income and social inequalities, poverty, law reforms, railway reforms and Indology among others. Bibek Debroy's recent co-authored magnum opus, Inked in India, stands distinguished as the premier comprehensive documentation, capturing the entirety of recognized fountain pen, nib, and ink manufacturers in India. Isher Judge Ahluwalia was an Indian economist, public policy researcher, and professor. She was Chairperson Emeritus, Board of Governors, at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). She had also served as the chairperson of the board of the International Food Policy Research Institute, and the chairperson of the Government of India's High-Powered Committee on Urban Infrastructure Services. She was awarded India's 3rd highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, in 2009.

The Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India is a premier Social Science research institute. It is also a higher education institution providing M.A. course in applied economics and PhD course in economics. The institute is internationally reputed for being a centre for advanced learning in economics. Its main objective is to promote research, teaching and training in disciplines relevant to development.

Labour in India refers to employment in the economy of India. In 2020, there were around 476.67 million workers in India, the second largest after China. Out of which, agriculture industry consist of 41.19%, industry sector consist of 26.18% and service sector consist 32.33% of total labour force. Of these over 94 percent work in unincorporated, unorganised enterprises ranging from pushcart vendors to home-based diamond and gem polishing operations. The organised sector includes workers employed by the government, state-owned enterprises and private sector enterprises. In 2008, the organised sector employed 27.5 million workers, of which 17.3 million worked for government or government owned entities. The Human Rights Measurement Initiative finds that India is only doing 43.9% of what should be possible at its level of income for the right to work. Employees are routinely taken advantage of by their employers because of loose labour laws across all industries in India.

Bakul Harshadrai Dholakia is the former Director of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (2002–2007). Prior to that, he was the Dean at Ahmedabad (1998–2001) and a professor in Economics He was also the Director General of International Management Institute, New Delhi. Prof. Khan has worked for the Ministry of Finance, Government of India and the UNDP at Project LARGE. He is a former Deputy Director and policy advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Prof. Khan writes a regular column for the business news publication livemint.com and for the newspaper etemaaddaily.com He is also a visiting professor at the Indian School of Business and at NALSAR in Hyderabad.

Manubhai Shah was an Indian politician who played an important political and developmental role in independent India for over half a century. He was the inugural minister of Ministry of Heavy Industries.

Statistics on unemployment in India had traditionally been collected, compiled and disseminated once every ten years by the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MLE), primarily from sample studies conducted by the National Sample Survey Office. Other than these 5-year sample studies, India has – except since 2017 – never routinely collected monthly, quarterly or yearly nationwide employment and unemployment statistics. In 2016, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a non-governmental entity based in Mumbai, started sampling and publishing monthly unemployment in India statistics.

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) is an independent private limited entity that serves both as an economic think-tank as well as a business information company. CMIE research group has built databases on the Indian economy and private companies. CMIE provides this information in the form of databases and research reports via a subscription-based business model. It is headquartered in Mumbai, with additional offices in India.
