The Kwelera National Botanical Garden is located at the Kwelera Nature Reserve on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape. It lies at the mouth of the Kwelera River. [1] The garden is the 10th national botanical garden established in South Africa and the first in the Eastern Cape. [1]
In 1994, the 6.96 ha (17.2 acres) Kwelera Island Local Nature Reserve was established as a protected area at the mouth of the Kwelera River. It is found opposite the garden. [2]
In 2014, 10.48 ha of farmland beside the Kwelera Nature Reserve was purchased by SANBI for the creation of the Kwelera National Botanical Garden. This land was added to the existing Kwelera Nature Reserve which will serve as the natural portion of the botanical garden. It would be jointly managed by SANBI and Eastern Cape Parks. [3] [4]

The Harold Porter National Botanical Garden covers almost 200 ha between mountain and sea, in the heart of the Cape Fynbos region within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve to the east of Cape Town, South Africa, specifically near Betty's Bay along Clarence Drive (R44). With about 1,600 plant species, the area contains a floral diversity per unit area that is greater than anywhere else in the world. The Garden consists of 10 hectares of cultivated gardens and 190.5 hectares of pristine natural fynbos. Foot trails reach cliffs, ravines, heaths, forests, streams, and mountain pools.
The Hantam National Botanical Garden is situated outside Nieuwoudtville. It is the first National Botanical Garden in the Northern Cape. The main section of the garden is 5 km south-east of the town, neighbouring the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve.

The Umtiza Nature Reserve is one of two forest nature reserves in the greater East London Coast Nature Reserve. It is named after Umtiza listeriana, a rare and protected legume found within the reserve. The Buffalo River borders the northern part of the reserve, and includes the remaining Umtiza Forest on the southern banks of the river. The Buffalo Pass traverses the entirety of the reserve and the surrounding Controlled Forest Area.
