Latin R&B (also known as Spanish R&B) is a style of R&B that originated in Latin America and the United States. It is a musical subgenre of American contemporary R&B and Latin soul that also takes influence from dancehall. [1] The genre began to gain popularity in the late 2010s and has since spread throughout Latin America.

Characteristics

Vocals include a majority of singing and occasionally rapping, in Spanish. The lyrics in Latin R&B are often about sadness, heartbreak, and sex. [1]

History

Latin R&B can trace its roots to Latin pop songs with an American R&B and new jack swing influence, such as the Selena/The Barrio Boyzz song "Donde Quiera Que Estés" released in 1994. [2] According to Rolling Stone, Spanish-language singles by Alex Rose, Rauw Alejandro and Paloma Mami, which borrow from R&B, reached a global audience. [1] In Latin America, the genre became popular with Alex Rose's "Toda", [1] Dalex's "Pa Mi" and "Cuaderno", [3] and most notably Sech's "Otro Trago", [4] which peaked in number one in Spain, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico. [5] In the United States, "Otro Trago" reached the top of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and peaked at No. 34 in the Hot 100. [6]

Otro Día Más Sin Verte, also called Sentir in Spain, is the Spanish-language debut album by Cuban singer Jon Secada. It was released on October 6, 1992 by EMI Latin to coincide with his English-language self-titled debut album, which was released in April 1992. The idea to release an all Spanish-language album was pitched by Secada's music mentor Emilio Estefan, after realizing that SBK Records have yet released such an album. Estefan presented Secada's proposal for a Spanish-language recording to the head of SBK, Charles Koppelman and then president of EMI Latin Jose Behar. Koppelman accepted the proposal after Behar stated that he could see "market potential" for Secada. With the help of Emilio's wife, Gloria Estefan, Secada translated selected compositions from his English-language debut album for Otro Día Más Sin Verte.

Trap is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in the Southern United States during the late 1980s. The genre gets its name from the Atlanta slang word "trap", a house used exclusively to sell drugs. Trap music uses synthesized drums and is characterized by complex hi-hat patterns, tuned kick drums with a long decay, and lyrical content that often focuses on drug use and urban violence. It utilizes very few instruments and focuses almost exclusively on snare drums and double- or triple-timed hi-hats.

The Academy is a collaborative EP by Rich Music, Panamanian singer Sech and American singer Dalex featuring American-Puerto Rican singer Justin Quiles, Puerto Rican singer Lenny Tavárez and Colombian singer Feid, released on October 11, 2019, through Rich Music. The project was produced mainly by Dímelo Flow with producers Jowan, Pedro "SP" Polanco, Rike Mike, Simon, Swifft, Slow Mike, ICE and DVLP having production credits in some tracks. The EP also features collaborations with singers Wisin, Cazzu, De La Ghetto, Zion & Lennox and Mariah Angeliq.
