Lego Unikitty! (stylized as LEGO Unikitty!) was a Lego theme based on the animated television series of the same name. It was licensed from The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation for Cartoon Network and the series starred the character of the same name from The Lego Movie [2] and its sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part . The theme was first introduced in August 2018. The product line was discontinued by the end of December 2019.

Overview

Lego Unikitty! was based on the animated television series. The product line focuses on Unikitty and her friends in Unikingdom. As the ruler of Unikingdom, Princess Unikitty has various misadventures in her land with her brother Prince Puppycorn, scientist Dr. Fox, bodyguard Hawkodile, and advisor Richard. They also deal with the threats of Master Frown from the neighboring Frown Town. Lego Unikitty! aimed to recreate the main characters in Lego form, including Unikitty, Puppycorn, Dr. Fox, Hawkodile and Richard. [3] [4]

In April 2016, Christoph Bartneck built a life-sized model of Unikitty from the Unikitty! animated television series. The Unikitty contained a total of 30,000 Lego bricks and was six feet tall. [5]

Development

Lego Unikitty! was inspired by 2017 TV series Unikitty! . The construction toy range was based on the TV series and developed in collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. The construction sets were designed to recreate the story and characters of the TV series in Lego form. [2] The first appearance of Unikitty on the big screen was in The Lego Movie (2014). [6]

During the development process of the Lego Unikitty! theme, Lego designers Yi-Chien Cheng and Janko Grujic explained the concept of the Lego Unikitty! theme. Yi-Chien Cheng explained, "It’s a unisex theme, for both boys and girls. I know Unikitty is pink, so that looks girly, but she's a very active character and there's a very exciting story. So we tried to use lots of colours and lots of crazy ideas, and created lots of cool characters with the new printed elements. So we hope the fans can use these to create something more. We look forward to seeing that!". Janko Grujic explained, "There's a lot of simple bricks, because we wanted to inspire kids to build, we wanted to inspire creativity, and to build in the simplest ways: Just stacking bricks. As Yi-Chien said, we definitely didn't want to exclude anyone, so there are sets that appeal more to the girls and sets that appeal more to the boys. But overall, we were trying to make something that would be for everyone." [7]

The initial concept for the theme originated in a rough sketch created by Ed Skudder, Lynn V Wang and Aaron Horvath in January 2019. The sketch reveals how Unikitty! was developed for television and how the character was refined to transform from 3D to 2D animation on screen. [8]

Toy line

According to BrickLink, The Lego Group released a total of nine Lego sets and promotional polybags as part of Lego Unikitty! theme. [1] It was discontinued by the end of December 2019. [17] [18]

Construction sets

In 2018, The Lego Group partnered with Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network. The Lego Group announced that the first wave of sets based on Unikitty! animated television series would be released on 1 August 2018. [19] The seven Lego sets [20] [21] released included Dr. Fox Magnifying Machine, [21] [b] Unikitty Cloud Car, [21] Prince Puppycorn Trike, [21] Party Time, [21] Dr. Fox Laboratory, [21] Unikingdom Creative Brick Box [21] and Unikingdom Fairground Fun. [21] [24] In addition, two polypag sets released as a promotions were Unikitty Roller Coaster Wagon [c] [25] and Castle Room. [21] [26] [27] Each of the sets featured seven core characters, named Princess Unikitty, [3] Prince Puppycorn, [3] Dr. Fox, [3] Hawkodile, [3] Richard, [3] Master Frown [3] and Brock. [3] The sets were designed primarily for children aged 5 to 12.

Collectible buildable figures

Unikitty! blind bags series 1 - Complete was released on 1 August 2018 and included 12 characters based on the Unikitty! animated television series. The twelve collectible buildable figures were Rainbow Unikitty, Angry Unikitty, Shades Puppycorn, Dinosaur Unikitty, [28] Shades Unikitty, Dalmatian Puppycorn, Dessert Unikitty, Camouflage Unikitty, Alien Puppycorn, Sleepy Unikitty, Queasy Unikitty and Dessert Puppycorn. Unikitty! TV series

In May 2017, Warner Bros. and Lego announced that Unikitty, a character from The Lego Movie , would get a spin-off animated television series on Cartoon Network. [46] [47] [48] [49] [50] For the show, she was voiced by Tara Strong. The premiere date was January 1, 2018 and the show's executive producers were Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Jill Wilfert and Sam Register. Ed Skudder (creator of Dick Figures and co-creator of Dogsnack) and Lynn Wang (co-creator of Dogsnack) were producers, while Aaron Horvath was supervising producer. [51] [52] [53] [54] [55] The series aired a Halloween special/sneak peek entitled "Spoooooky Game" on October 27, 2017. [d] [56] The series aired a second sneak peek titled "Sparkle Matter Matters" on November 17, 2017, and a third and final sneak peek/Christmas special titled "No Day Like Snow Day" aired December 1, 2017. On August 27, 2020, the series concluded with a two-part finale entitled "The Birthday To End All Birthdays". [57]

Publications

In November 2018, a book titled Unikitty: Unikitty's Guide to Being Happy based on the Lego Unikitty! theme was published on 1 November 2018 by Scholastic. [58] [59]

The sets feature vehicles, characters and scenes from the comics and films. The inspirations for the design of these vary widely. For example, the Batmobile retains its basic sleek shape and prominent fins from the Tim Burton films, whereas the "Bat-Tank" seems to be based on the tank-like Batmobile in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Lego Elves was a Lego product line produced by The Lego Group that was launched in 2015. The product line was based on the storyline of accompanying animated series on Disney Channel, the Lego YouTube channel, and Netflix which follow the adventures of a character named Emily Jones who travels to a magical land called Elvendale. The theme aimed to introduce a fantasy element to girl-focused Lego products. It was discontinued in 2018.

Nexo Knights is a 3D animated television series that aired on Cartoon Network and premiered in 2015. It was produced by the Lego Group to coincide with the Lego theme of the same name. The series is based on a fantasy castle concept and is set in a futuristic kingdom called Knighton, which is home to five young knights. The storyline follows the adventures of the five knights as they defend their home from a court jester named Jestro and his monsters. Four seasons were produced for a total of 40 episodes. The fourth season finished airing in 2017. In 2018, the Lego Group discontinued the Nexo Knights theme, which also resulted in the cancellation of the series.

Lego Disney is a Lego theme based on the various Disney Princesses and Disney characters involved in different Disney films and television series. It is licensed from Walt Disney Pictures. The theme was first introduced in 2016 and was re-branded theme from the Lego Disney Princess line in 2017. The toy line was accompanied by several shorts and television specials based on Lego Disney.

The Lego Movie is an American media franchise and shared universe based on Lego construction toys. It began with the 2014 film The Lego Movie, which was directed and written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The success of the film led to the release of two licensed video games, a 4D film theme park attraction, two spin-off films titled The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie, which were released in 2017, Unikitty! an animated television series that also came out in the same year, and the sequel to the original film titled The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part in 2019. The series came on the market in 2019 and, after the discontinued Lego Dimensions and Nexo Knights series, represented another attempt by The Lego Group to link digital and real game worlds. It was accompanied by the Lego Hidden Side webisode series and a television special, which was released on the Lego YouTube channel, and on Cartoon Network. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2020.
