Devolver Digital is an American video game publisher based in Austin, Texas. The company was founded in June 2009 by Harry Miller, Rick Stults, and Mike Wilson, who had co-founded publishing companies Gathering of Developers and Gamecock Media Group. [1] [2] Devolver Digital began by publishing high-definition remakes of games in the Serious Sam series, their first game being Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter . [3] After success with these remakes and spin-off games based on the series, Devolver Digital began publishing games from other, smaller independent studios, one of the first being their breakout title Hotline Miami (2012). [4] [5]
Devolver continued to expand its operations by publishing titles from smaller indie developers, such as Genital Jousting. During this time, it published financially successful video games including Shadow Warrior (2013), The Talos Principle (2014), Enter the Gungeon (2016), and Scum (2020). [6] [7] By 2018, Devolver Digital had quickly grown to sixteen staff members and had published over a hundred games. [7] [8] In August 2020, Devolver Digital published Mediatonic's Fall Guys, which generated $185 million within a month after release. [9] In March 2021, Epic Games acquired Mediatonic, and as a result, Devolver Digital sold all its publishing rights to Fall Guys. [10] Later that year, Devolver Digital became a public company while publishing titles such as Death's Door and Loop Hero . [11] [12] By then, it had wholly acquired several developers, including Croteam, developer of Serious Sam series, Dodge Roll, developer of Enter the Gungeon, Firefly Studios, developer of Stronghold series and Nerial, developer of Reigns . The company was founded in June 2009 by Nigel Lowrie, Harry Miller, Graeme Struthers, Rick Stults, and Mike Wilson, five executives who had been involved with Gathering of Developers and Gamecock Media Group, which published games on developer-friendly terms, but due to the high cost associated with releasing retail games saw themselves acquired and dissolved by larger companies. To avoid this, Devolver Digital instead turned to digital distribution channels.

In the video game industry during 2019, both Sony and Microsoft announced their intent to reveal their next-generation consoles in 2020, while Nintendo introduced a smaller Nintendo Switch Lite, and Google announced its streaming game platform Stadia. The controversy over loot boxes as a potential gambling route continued into 2019, with some governments like Belgium and the Netherlands banning games with them under their gambling laws, while the United Kingdom acknowledging their current laws prevent enforcing these as if they were games of chance. The first video cards to support real-time ray tracing were put onto the consumer market, including the first set of games that would take advantage of the new technology. The Epic Games Store continued its growth in challenging the largest digital PC game distribution service Steam, leading to concern and debate about Epic Games' methods to seek games for its service. Dota Auto Chess, a community-created mod for Dota 2, introduced a new subgenre of strategy games called auto battlers, which saw several games in the genre released throughout the year. Blizzard Entertainment faced criticism due to their involvement in the Blitzchung controversy, which began after they had banned a Hearthstone player for making comments during a tournament regarding the 2019–20 Hong Kong protests.

In the video game industry, 2021 saw the release of many new titles. The numerous delays in software and hardware releases due to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic heavily impacted development schedules, leading to several games being delayed into 2022 or even postponed indefinitely. Additionally, computer and console hardware were impacted by the combined effects of a semiconductor shortage and a rising growth of bitcoin mining that strained the supply of critical components.
