Burkina Faso competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004.
Burkina Faso has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games held since 1988. Under its previous name of Upper Volta (VOL), the country also competed in 1972. After appearing in eight different Olympics, Burkina Faso won their first Olympic medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics, following Hugues Fabrice Zango's bronze-winning performance in the men's triple jump. No athletes from Burkina Faso have competed in any Winter Olympic Games.
Burkina Faso participated in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore.
Séverine Nébié is a Burkinabé judoka who trains in France. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Women -63kg event and lost in the second round. She was also the flag bearer for Burkina Faso at the opening ceremony. She also competes in ju-jitsu in which she won the world championship 2015 in Thailand.
Angelika Sita Ouedraogo is a Burkinabé swimmer. She competed in the 50 m freestyle event at the 2012 Summer Olympics where she ranked 63rd and did not advance to the semifinals.
During the Parade of Nations section of the 1972 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, athletes from each country participating in the Olympics paraded in the arena, preceded by their flag. The flag was borne by a sportsperson from that country chosen either by the National Olympic Committee or by the athletes themselves to represent their country.
Sarah Tondé is a Burkinabé track and field athlete who specializes in the Women's 100 metres and Women's 200 metres events. She competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the Women's 100 metres event at the age of 16, where she finished in 8th place at 12.56 seconds. She was also the flag bearer of Burkina Faso during the 2000 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
