Cook Islands participated in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore.

During the Parade of Nations portion of the 1988 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, athletes from each country participating in the Olympics paraded in the arena, preceded by their flag. The flag was borne by a sportsperson from that country chosen either by the National Olympic Committee or by the athletes themselves to represent their country.

Helema Williams is a Cook Islander sailor. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Laser Radial class event where she finished last. She was the flag bearer for the Cook Islands during the opening ceremony.

William Taramai is a middle-distance athlete, who competed for the Cook Islands.

During the Parade of Nations at the 2022 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, held on 28 July 2022, athletes bearing the flags of their respective nations lead their national delegations as they paraded into Alexander Stadium in the host city of Birmingham, England. A total of 72 Commonwealth Games Associations entered into the stadium.
