MTV New Year's was a television special which aired on New Year's Eve annually on MTV, though the title varies in some way every year. Since 1998, the special was typically broadcast from Times Square in New York City, and prominently features coverage of its annual ball drop event, along with live performances by popular musicians from MTV Studios in One Astor Plaza. During the late 1990s, 2000s, and part of the early 2010s, the special was heavily promoted and featured top musical acts and celebrities but in recent years has been occasionally significantly reduced, often featuring just a one or two hosts broadcasting from the studios or a platform in Times Square with no audience or musical performances.

A television special is a stand-alone television show which temporarily interrupts episodic programming normally scheduled for a given time slot. Specials have been produced which provide a full range of entertainment and informational value available via the television medium, in various formats, and in any viewing lengths.

The celebrations generally go on past midnight into New Year's Day, 1 January.

MTV American pay television channel

MTV is an American pay television channel that serves as the flagship property of owner Viacom Media Networks and is headquartered in New York City. The channel was launched on August 1, 1981, and originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys" (VJs). At first, MTV's main target demographic was young adults, but today it is primarily teenagers, particularly high school and college students.

The network decided not to carry a special at the end of 2015 leading into 2016, choosing to carry a marathon of the viral clip series Ridiculousness instead, with a teaser of the first segment of the next episode of the network's series Teen Wolf aired at midnight; the network and parent company Viacom in general went through number of staff and budget cutbacks in 2015 due to declining ratings. [1] This was repeated in subsequent years.

Although the format bears some similarity to viewer-submission driven shows such as America's Funniest Home Videos, Ridiculousness producers, as well as the show's network, MTV, do not accept viewer submissions and air a disclaimer before and after each episode warning that, because of the dangerous nature of the stunts being shown, any attempts to submit a video to the show will be rejected.
