Mark Group Limited is a UK based energy advice and installation company, who focus upon energy efficiency. Mark Group went into administration on 7 October 2015. They work with homeowners, businesses, housebuilders and the construction industry, local authorities and social housing providers. Mark Group operates out of 17 locations throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Its head office is based in Leicester, East Midlands, where approximately 500 of its staff operate. [1]

History

Mark Group started in 1974 as a small family-run business, installing cavity wall and loft insulation in Leicestershire, under the name Mark Insulations. [2]

The company was overhauled in 2006, with the introduction of renewable technology options; by 2007, the company had grown from 400 to over 1000 employees. [3] [4]

Mark Group sponsors Leicester Tigers RFC's Community Programme, which encourages young people to get involved in the sport. [5] Mark Group has been supporting The Prince's Trust since 2008 and in January 2013 became the charity's first Gold Patron in the East Midlands, working to help young people locally to have a brighter future. [6]

In 2013 Mark Group was recognised as the 'Fastest Growing Business' in the UK's Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 Awards. [7]

Following a change of government policy, it was announced in 2014 that Mark Group were cutting 670 jobs across the UK. [8] Mark Group USA went out of business in December 2014. [9] [10] In February 2015, Mark Group New Zealand was placed in liquidation with staff laid off. [11]

The home insulation elements of Mark Group were purchased by 4 former directors as part of a management buy out. That company became BillSaveUK in October 2015.

International Bases

In 2009, Mark Group opened a base in Sydney, Australia. [12] [13] Mark Group Australia mirrors UK operations.

In 2010, Mark Group opened North American headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [14] The opening was announced by Pennsylvania State Governor, Ed Rendell and Philadelphia Mayor, Michael Nutter.

In July, 2011, Mark Group announced its acquisition of New Zealand energy saving business, Right House. [15] The business was acquired from electricity generator, Meridian Energy. Through the acquisition, it was stated that all of Right House's employees and operational bases would be retained and Hamish Sisson would remain as chief executive officer.

Mark Group USA went out of business in December 2014. [9] [10] [16] In February 2015, Right House was placed in liquidation with staff given notice. [11]

Services

Mark Group advises on and installs energy-saving products, including: cavity wall and loft insulation, solid wall insulation, solar electric, solar hot water and air source heat pumps. [17] The Mark Group Academy opened in 2007 for the training and development of its installers, at a purpose-built site in Leicester. [18] [19] The 1,000th Academy graduate was congratulated by Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Greg Barker in June 2010. [20] [21]

Energy Saving Partnership

Energy Saving Partnership is a sister company to Mark Group.[ citation needed ] In 2008, they launched HeatSeekers vehicles, which use thermal imaging to look at heat loss, and identifying areas for better insulation. HeatSeekers works with the agreement of local authorities to image houses and its vehicles can gather up to 1,000 images every hour. [22] [23] [24]

Media

Mark Group has featured on both BBC and ITV providing comment for features which have focussed on energy-efficiency. The BBC's 'Low Carbon Family' broadcast in 2007 [25] where Mark Group helped make the Hawksworth family home in Leicestershire more energy-efficient. In 2010, Mark Group featured on ITV's Tonight Show: 'Money to Burn',> looking at how consumers could fight back against the rising cost of energy bills. [26] In June 2011, Mark Group featured in the New York Times; the article focussed on its expansion into the US. [27]

Administration

On 7 October 2015, Chris Farrington, Matt Cowlishaw and William Dawson, partners in Deloitte LLP, were appointed Joint Administrators of Mark Group Limited – In Administration ("the Company")

The affairs, business and property of the Company are currently being managed by the Joint Administrators. The Joint Administrators act as agents of the Company only and contract without personal liability. The Joint Administrators are authorised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Residential & Domestic Customers (Solar Panel and Insulation Installations) Regrettably, all appointments have been cancelled for surveys and installations. We will be writing to customers shortly.

For the PV (solar panel business) the customer contracts are with SunEdison and not Mark Group Limited. SunEdison have released the following statement for customers and will be speaking directly to customers.

"SunEdison will continue to look after our existing customers, honouring existing planned installations via our channel partners."

Suppliers The Joint Administrators are not personally adopting any contracts that may have been entered into by the Company, nor are they personally liable in respect of them. Suppliers will be contacted directly in relation to future orders. If it is necessary to place orders with you for goods and services, such orders must bear the signature of the Joint Administrators or one of their authorised representatives.

If any orders placed by the Company prior to the Administrators' appointment have not yet been completed, these should not be delivered unless you receive written confirmation, from the Joint Administrators or one of their authorised representatives, that the goods and services are still required.

Certain creditors may have a Retention of Title (ROT) claim over goods in the Company's possession. If you believe you have an ROT claim please contact one of the Joint Administrators' duly authorised representatives via email on UKFAmarkgroupsuppliers[at]deloitte.co.uk to make the necessary arrangements to deal with your claim. Such claims should be supported by relevant documentation.

The company is also an energy retailer, and built a portfolio of wind and solar generation which was sold in 2022. Founded by Juliet Davenport, its CEO is Nigel Pocklington.

Eneco headquarters are located in Rotterdam. It also carries out energy trading and is involved in sustainable energy projects.

SolarCity Corporation was a publicly traded company headquartered in Fremont, California that sold and installed solar energy generation systems as well as other related products and services to residential, commercial and industrial customers. The company was founded on July 4, 2006, by Peter and Lyndon Rive, the cousins of Tesla, Inc. CEO Elon Musk. Tesla acquired SolarCity in 2016, at a cost of approximately $2.6 billion and reorganized its solar business into Tesla Energy.

REC Solar

REC Solar was a solar energy contractor specializing in commercial solar and storage systems, including the installation of commercial solar electric systems in the United States. The company focused on providing products and services to support commercial, government and utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) installations.

The Energy Efficient Homes Package was an Australian government program implemented by the Rudd Government. It was designed by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and was administered by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. The program consisted of two streams:

Auto Windscreens is a United Kingdom automotive glazing company specialising in windscreen repair and replacement. It is owned by Auto Windscreesn Services Limited, and is headquartered in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Working predominantly with insurers, brokers and fleet management customers, the company operates a nationwide fitting centre network that utilises a mobile fleet of trained technicians.

A feed-in tariff is when payments are given by energy suppliers if a property or organisation generates their own electricity using technology such as solar panels or wind turbines and feeds any surplus back to the grid. In the United Kingdom, they were entered into law by the Energy Act 2008 and took effect from April 2010. The scheme closed to new applicants on 31 March 2019.

HomeSun led the transformation in the UK of solar for homes with the launch of Free Solar in 2010 using the Feed-in Tariff (FITs) subsidy. Working with government-led subsidies, HomeSun now offers free cavity wall insulation. The company's particular focus within the category is residential blocks of flats of three storeys and above.

The Green Deal was a UK government policy initiative that gave homeowners, landlords and tenants the opportunity to pay for energy efficient home improvements through the savings on their energy bills from 2012 to 2015. At the heart of the Green Deal was the rule that savings on bills would exceed the cost of the work. By meeting this 'Golden Rule', consumers were able to receive energy savings without direct cost. Consumers then paid back the cost of such improvements through the expected savings in their energy bills. However, there is no guarantee that the eventual savings made by consumers will match the cost of the loans they take out to make the improvements and industry bodies recognised there was a risk consumers could end up out of pocket.

Solarplicity Energy Limited was a renewable energy company based in Hertfordshire, England. In August 2019 the company became the 13th energy supplier to collapse since 2018, affecting around 7,500 domestic and 500 business customers.

Tesla Energy is the clean energy subsidiary of Tesla, Inc., headquartered in Fremont, California, that develops, manufactures, sells and installs photovoltaic solar energy generation systems, battery energy storage products, as well as other related products and services to residential, commercial and industrial customers.

Home energy upgrades from public utilities are added home energy efficiency and renewable energy features planned or installed by public utilities. Help from a public utility can make it easier for a homeowner to select, install or operate climate-friendly components. The utility might assist with coordinated use of utility-supplied energy, building features, financing, operating options and neighborhood supplied energy.

Octopus Energy Group is a British renewable energy group specialising in sustainable energy. It was founded in 2015 with the backing of British fund management company Octopus Group, a British asset management company. Headquartered in London, the company has operations in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States. As of September 2021 the company has over three million domestic and business customers, making it the fourth largest energy supplier in the UK.
