The Energy Institute (EI) is a professional organization for engineers and other professionals in energy related fields. The EI was formed in 2003 with the merger of the Institute of Petroleum (dating back to 1913) and the Institute of Energy (dating back to 1925). It has an international membership of about 20,000 people and 200 companies. Its main office is at 61 New Cavendish Street, London, England. EI is a registered charity with a Royal Charter. [1]
In the United Kingdom, EI has the authority to establish professional registration for the titles of Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, and Engineering Technician, as a licensed member institution of the Engineering Council. [2] It is also licensed by the Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist status. [1]
In 2003 the Institute of Petroleum and the Institute of Energy merged to form the Energy Institute. The offices of the Institute of Petroleum became the offices of the combined organization, and the offices of the Institute of Energy in London were closed. [3]
The Institute of Petroleum was formed in 1913 as The Institution of Petroleum Technologists (IPT). The first president was Boverton Redwood. The second president was John Cadman. The IPT named its Cadman Award in his honor. In 1938 the organization expanded to cover the oil and gas industry and was renamed The Institute of Petroleum (IP). [3]
The Institution of Fuel Economy Engineers was founded in 1925, and the Institution of Fuel Technology in 1926. The two merged in 1927 as the Institute of Fuel (IoF). The first president after the merger was Alfred Mond. The IoF named the Melchett Award in his honor. In 1979 the organization became the Institute of Energy (IoE). [3]
The EI has several categories of membership from student to fellow. It also has corporate members. Membership is required in order to go through the professional licensing procedures the organization supervises. [4]
The official journal of EI is the Journal of the Energy Institute. [5] It is currently published by Elsevier. [6] EI also publishes two membership magazines, Energy World and Petroleum Review. [7]
The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) was a British professional organisation of electronics, electrical, manufacturing, and Information Technology professionals, especially electrical engineers. It began in 1871 as the Society of Telegraph Engineers. In 2006, it ceased to exist independently, becoming part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Regulation and licensure in engineering is established by various jurisdictions of the world to encourage public welfare, safety, well-being and other interests of the general public and to define the licensure process through which an engineer becomes authorized to practice engineering and/or provide engineering professional services to the public.

An engineering technologist is a professional trained in certain aspects of development and implementation of a respective area of technology. Engineering technology education is even more applied and less theoretical than engineering education, though in a broad sense both have a focus on practical application. Engineering technologists often assist engineers but after years of experience, they can also become engineers. Like engineers, areas where engineering technologists can work include product design, fabrication and testing. Also as with engineers, engineering technologists sometimes rise to senior management positions in industry or become entrepreneurs.
A Bachelor of Engineering is a first professional undergraduate academic degree awarded to a student after three to five years of studying engineering at an accredited university. In the UK, a B.Eng. degree will be accredited by one of the Engineering Council's professional engineering institutions as suitable for registration as an incorporated engineer or chartered engineer with further study to masters level. In Canada, the degree from a Canadian university can be accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Alternatively, it might be accredited directly by another professional engineering institution, such as the US-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The B.Eng. contributes to the route to chartered engineer (UK), registered engineer or licensed professional engineer and has been approved by representatives of the profession.

Its worldwide membership is currently in excess of 158,000 in 153 countries. The IET's main offices are in Savoy Place in London, England and at Michael Faraday House in Stevenage, England.
The Engineering Council is the UK's regulatory authority for registration of Chartered and Incorporated engineers and engineering technician, holding a register of these and providing advice to students, engineers, employers and academic institutions on the standards for registration and procedures for registration. It is also responsible for the accreditation of educational and training programs, delegating this responsibility to licensed member institutions.

It has registered charity status in the UK. It has a worldwide membership of 21,000 individuals based in over 128 countries. The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is the United Kingdom's professional body and learned society for physicists, engineers and technologists within the field of medicine, founded in 1995, changing its name from the Institution of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Biology (IPEMB) in 1997. The Institute is governed by an elected Board of Trustees reporting to which are the Science, Research and Innovation Council and the Professional and Standards Council. The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers is an international professional engineering association based in London that represents building services engineers, also commonly known as mechanical and electrical engineers, architectural engineers, technical building services engineers, building engineers, or facilities and services planning engineers. It is a full member of the Construction Industry Council, and is consulted by government on matters relating to construction, engineering and sustainability. It is also licensed by the Engineering Council to assess candidates for inclusion on its Register of Professional Engineers.

In the United Kingdom, a Chartered Engineer is an engineer registered with the Engineering Council. Contemporary Chartered Engineers are degree-qualified and have gained the highest level of professional competencies through training and monitored professional practice experience. This is a peer-reviewed process. The formation process of a Chartered Engineer consists of obtaining an accredited Bachelor's degree with honours in engineering or technology, plus either an appropriate Master's degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD) accredited by a professional engineering institution, or appropriate further learning to Master's level alongside a minimum of four years of professional post graduate peer reviewed experience and the ability to demonstrate fulfilment of various skills-based criteria. The title Chartered Engineer is protected by civil law and is a terminal qualification in engineering. The Engineering Council regulates professional engineering titles in the UK. With more than 180,000 registrants from many countries, designation as a Chartered Engineer is one of the most recognisable international engineering qualifications.
