NASCAR 2001 is a racing simulator video game for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, and the fourth game in the EA Sports's NASCAR series, following NASCAR 2000 .

It is the first in the series to include manufacturer representation (although the Windows version of NASCAR 2000 and NASCAR Arcade , released by Sega under EA Sports' license, also featured manufacturer branding) and Daytona International Speedway. The game features tributes to Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr. (who otherwise are also playable drivers), who died during the season the game was based. The game was succeeded by NASCAR Thunder 2002 .

Reception

The game received "average" reviews on both platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. [3] [4] However, David Chen of NextGen said of the PlayStation 2 version, "Ultimately as enjoyable as driving in circles, NASCAR 2001 is neither pretty nor fun." [22]

Lamchop of GamePro said in its November 2000 issue, "Ultimately, NASCAR 2001 for the PlayStation is a fast-paced racing game that should keep you glued to the track—if you can overlook the sound issues. At the very least, a rental will get your adrenaline pumping for a weekend of true NASCAR competition fun." [25] [b] About an issue later, Air Hendrix wrote, "For its rookie season on the PS2, NASCAR 2001 handles like a winner. It's not perfect, but it's close enough to thrill stock-car fans looking for the next cool ride." [26] [c]

Dale Earnhardt appeared in the game as a driver as a result of entering his name as a Create-A-Car driver's name; he did not appear in the previous game due to his death. He appeared as a legend in subsequent games.

NHL 2002 is a video game released by EA Sports in 2001. It is the predecessor to NHL 2003. The game's cover man is Pittsburgh Penguins superstar and owner Mario Lemieux, who had just made a comeback after being retired for three and a half years. It was the first installment of the NHL series to be released on Xbox.

Arctic Thunder is a 2000 snowmobile racing game developed by Midway Games. It was released as an arcade game, Midway's final arcade title, and was also ported to the Sony PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles, with added content, as a launch title for the latter. In the arcade version of the game, fans built into the cabinet blow cold winds in the player's face during gameplay to simulate the feeling of riding a snowmobile while the seat contains a vibrating shaker motor to simulate engine rumbling. Arctic Thunder is part of Midway's Thunder series, which also included Hydro Thunder, 4 Wheel Thunder, Offroad Thunder, and Hydro Thunder Hurricane. An updated arcade version, titled Ultimate Arctic Thunder, which added some of the content introduced in the home versions, was developed by Play Mechanix and distributed by Betson Enterprises, was released sometime in 2004.

The PlayStation 2 version was originally slated for release in the U.S. on 7 November, before it was delayed to 28 November. A Game Boy Color version was planned but cancelled.
