PickMe is a Sri Lankan taxi hailing and delivery app developed by Digital Mobility Solutions Lanka Ltd. It launched in June 2015. [2] [3] The app is available in English, Sinhala and Tamil on Android and iOS. By 2021 the company had 8000 registered users. [4]

History

PickMe was founded by entrepreneur Jiffry Zulfer in 2015. It was backed by the International Finance Corporation. [5]

In September 2015, PickMe raised 150 million rupees in private funding. [6] By June 2017, 6.5 million rides in total had been completed, with 35,000 rides happening daily, and the number of customers stood at around 620,000. [7]

YAMU acquisition

PickMe acquired YAMU, a food and hotel review site, in July 2019. At the time YAMU had 325,000 monthly active users and 615,000 monthly pageviews. [8]

COVID-19 response

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka, PickMe utilised innovations such as displaying the vaccination status of the driver, providing cash incentives for passengers riding to the nearest vaccination center, contact tracing, and installation of separators and hand sanitization facilities. [4] PickMe's Flash delivery service was used by restaurants to deliver over 8200 orders during the lockdowns. [9]

IPO

The company announced its initial public offering on the Colombo Stock Exchange in September 2024. The company offered 13.04% of its shares and hoped to raise LKR1.5 billion. [10] The IPO was held on 13 September 2024 and was oversubscribed on its opening day itself. [11]

Technology

PickMe's backend services utilise the microservices architecture, with over 100 microservices. [12] It utilises Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure, is deployed using Docker and Kubernetes, and uses Apache Kafka as a messaging service. The data science platform uses Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark, and Apache Hive. PickMe's micoservices are written in Go. [13]

City of Dreams Sri Lanka, formerly branded as Cinnamon Life Integrated Resort, is the first integrated resort in Sri Lanka and the largest private investment in the country. Sri Lankan-British architect, Cecil Balmond designed the resort while Hyundai Engineering & Construction is the main contractor. The construction of the resort began in 2014. All the buildings in the resort topped off in May 2019. Even though the resort was originally planned to be completed by 2018, the project got delayed several times due to various reasons. John Keells started handing over keys to the suites apartments in August 2021. With the handing over of residential and commercial units, revenue recognition started at Cinnamon Life. The remainder of the project is scheduled to be launched in a phased manner, in the second half of 2024. In April 2024, John Keells Holdings announced an agreement with Melco Resorts & Entertainment to operate the gaming facility of Cinnamon Life Resort. Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams Sri Lanka, the 687-room luxury hotel within the resort, was declared on 15 October 2024.

Amaya Resorts & Spas, trading as Hayleys Leisure PLC, is a Sri Lankan hospitality company. The company is listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange on 11 March 1996 and Sri Lankan conglomerate, Hayleys owns a controlling stake of 61.66% of the company's stocks. In 2020, Amaya Resorts & Spas ranked 87th amongst the top 100 most valuable brands in Sri Lanka by Brand Finance.

Hilton Colombo is a Hilton brand five-star luxury hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The hotel is owned by Hotel Developers (Lanka) Ltd. The company was incorporated in 1983 and was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in the following year. The hotel was launched in 1987 and the 30th anniversary was celebrated in 2017 with an issuance of a stamp and a first day cover. However, the company is delisted from the stock exchange in 2020 and solely owned by the Government of Sri Lanka, therefore, runs as a state-owned enterprise.

<i>LMD</i> (magazine)

LMD, formerly known as Lanka Monthly Digest, is an English language Sri Lankan business magazine. Media Services (Pvt) Ltd owns the magazine, and was first issued in August 1994. The magazine is available in print and online versions. Hiran Hewavisenti is the magazine's editor-in-chief. LMD derives its revenue from advertising and subscription fees. Monthly circulation is about 5,000 while monthly readership is around 30,000-40,000. The magazine has a subscriber base of about 1,800. Living and Discover Sri Lanka are the sister publications of the magazine.

LAUGFS Gas PLC is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company based in Sri Lanka. The company commenced operations in 2001 and in 2010, was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange following an initial public offering. LAUGFS Gas expanded its operations to Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates. In 2019, the company opened an LPG terminal at the Hambantota International Port, the largest of its kind in South Asia. LAUGFS Gas is ranked 33rd in LMD 100, an annual list of Sri Lankan listed companies by revenue. The Sri Lankan economic crisis heavily affected the operations of the company. Difficulties in securing foreign exchange have resulted in the disruption of LPG imports, shortages in the market and long queues. The company controls a number of subsidiaries but divested its Bangladesh operations in November 2022.

Renuka Holdings PLC, also called Renuka Group, is a conglomerate company in Sri Lanka. Ceylonese businessman Alfred Thambiyah laid the foundations of the Renuka Group by acquiring the Crago Boat Dispatch Company in 1936 and establishing Renuka Hotel, named after his youngest daughter Indu Renuka in 1969. Indu Renuka Rajiyah founded Renuka Enterprises in 1975, and Renuka Holdings in 1979 marked the formal beginning of the group. Renuka Holdings went public in 2008 and following the listing on the Colombo Stock Exchange, the company pursued a growth strategy. Vallibel Finance PLC is a non-banking financial company in Sri Lanka. Vallibel Finance was incorporated in 1974 as The Rupee Finance Company. Dhammika Perera acquired the company in 2005 and was renamed Vallibel Finance. After an initial public offering, the company was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 2010. Vallibel Finance joined the LankaPay electronic fund transfer network in 2014. In 2020, the company signed an agreement with the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka to build a 16-storey office complex in Kollupitiya. Vallibel Finance is one of the LMD 100 companies in Sri Lanka. Vallibel Finance is also ranked amongst the 100 most valuable brands in Sri Lanka in 2022.

PickMe Food is Sri Lankan online food delivery platform launched by PickMe in 2018. PickMe Food also provides on-demand grocery, essential medicines and package delivery service called PickMe Flash. PickMe Food rivals international Uber Eats and would make the industry a duopoly. Both companies major players in the online food delivery industry since 2020. In 2019, it expanded across Sri Lanka to Colombo, Kandy, Negambo, Gampaha, Kurunagala and Kaluthara. In 2019 PickMe Food acquired YAMU restaurant portal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Capital Alliance</span> Sri Lankan financial company

Capital Alliance PLC, abbreviated as CALT, is a primary dealer in Sri Lanka. The company is a subsidiary of Capital Alliance Holdings Ltd. Capital Alliance Holdings Group is an investment bank. The company was incorporated in 2000 as Capital Asia Markets Ltd, a subsidiary of Asia Capital Ltd. The company changed its name to Capital Alliance Limited two years later. In 2003, Capital Alliance obtained a primary dealer licence from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Following an initial public offering, the company was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in December 2021. Capital Alliance is ranked among the 100 most valuable brands in Sri Lanka.
