Pipestone Region

The Pipestone Region is an area in southwestern Minnesota. The area was named for its supply of pipestone (catlinite), a type of limestone which local Indians carved into pipes. The area is also noted for quartzite quarries.

Catlinite is a type of argillite, usually brownish-red in color, which occurs in a matrix of Sioux Quartzite. Because it is fine-grained and easily worked, it is prized by Native Americans, primarily those of the Plains nations for use in making ceremonial pipes such as chanunpas. Pipestone quarries are located and preserved in Pipestone National Monument outside Pipestone, Minnesota, in Pipestone County, Minnesota, and at the Pipestone River in Ontario, Canada.

Limestone is a carbonate sedimentary rock that is often composed of the skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, foraminifera, and molluscs. Its major materials are the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). A closely related rock is dolomite, which contains a high percentage of the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2. In fact, in old USGS publications, dolomite was referred to as magnesian limestone, a term now reserved for magnesium-deficient dolomites or magnesium-rich limestones.

History

The Dakota were early inhabitants of the Pipestone Region.

The area was part of the Louisiana Purchase and was settled by Americans beginning in the mid-19th century. The city of Pipestone was founded in 1873.

Its non-native population was around 60,000 inhabitants, of whom half were African slaves.

Pipestone is a city in Minnesota, United States, and the county seat of Pipestone County. The population was 4,317 at the 2010 census. The city is also the site of the Pipestone National Monument.

Pipestone National Monument was established in 1937 in the region.

Pipestone National Monument is located in southwestern Minnesota, just north of the city of Pipestone, Minnesota. It is located along the highways of U.S. Route 75, Minnesota State Highway 23 and Minnesota State Highway 30.
