Project10200"Khalzan" helicopter carrier was an unrealized 1980s Soviet helicopter carrier project derived from the civilian Project 1609 "Atlantic" class Ro-Ro type cargo ship. [1]

Development

The development of the Project 10200 was initiated by Nikolaev PKB "Chernosudoproekt" in 1978-1980. Based on the civilian Project 1609 "Atlantic" [2] cargo ships, it would have been equipped with modern gas-turbine engines.

The total displacement of the ship of the project was approx. 31,000 tons. The design was a free flight deck with a shifted starboard superstructure, with 6 helicopters being located on the decks. The below deck hangar, served by two elevators, had provisions to hold around 22 helicopters.

Proposed weapon systems

The helicopter carriers were planned to have 28-30 ASW helicopters, like the Ka-27 and the ship was to install systems to support the projected vertical takeoff/landing (VTOL) fighter jet, the Yak-141.

The ship plans included only defensive weapons, like the 3K95 Kinzhal SAM missiles and the AK-630 CIWS guns.

Ending

The Resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers on 21.04.1977 planned the construction of the ships between 1981-1990. The approved plan provided for the construction of two landing and anti-submarine helicopter carriers. [3]

However, the Black Sea Shipyard was completely overwhelmed by the construction of the Project 1143 and later the Project 1143.5 aircraft carriers. Ultimately Project 10200 "Khalzan" was terminated, and priority was given towards the construction of the aircraft carriers of Project 1143.

The Soviet Ministry of Defence also argued that such project to be shelved, as the project's performance was less capable than the Project 1143 class carriers. [4]
