The Don-class submarine tender was the NATO reporting name for a group of seven submarine tenders built for the Soviet Navy in the late 1950s. The Soviet designation was Project 310 Batur. Evolving from a need for dispersed basing of submarines in the advent of a nuclear war, the ships were designed to support distant operations of the Soviet Union's submarine fleet, capable of repairing and resupplying. However, the Soviets returned to stationary basing of their submarines and the Don class were later converted into flagships. One vessel was exported to Indonesia in 1962 and due to the ship's heavy armament, was used primarily for patrol duties. The ships of the Don class were removed from service in the mid 1990s and broken up for scrap.
With the advent of nuclear war and the danger that stationary bases faced, the Soviet Navy sought to disperse the fleet while still maintaining functionality. [1] As a result, the Soviet Central Design Bureau came up with Plavuchaya Baza (Russian) meaning "Floating Base" in the mid 1950s to serve as distant logistic support for submarines. [1] [2] Designated Project 310 Batur by the Soviets and the NATO reporting name Don class, [3] their chief designer was V. I. Mogilevich. [1] Each ship was capable of providing emergency repairs to submarine hulls, and resupplying and rearming up to four submarines of projects 611 and 613 each. Each ship of the class had storage space for 42 533-millimetre (21.0 in) torpedoes. [1] [lower-alpha 1]
The sources disagree on the dimensions and displacement of the ships. Kuzin & Nikolsky state the vessels had a standard displacement of 5,030 tonnes (4,950 long tons ) and 7,150 t (7,040 long tons) fully loaded and measured 140 metres (459 ft 4 in) long with a beam of 17.67 m (58 ft 0 in) and a draught of 5.6 m (18 ft 4 in). [1] Sharpe has the Don-class tenders displacing 5,100 t (5,000 long tons) standard and 6,900 t (6,800 long tons) fully loaded and measuring the same length and beam as Kuzin & Nikolsky but with a draught of 5.4 m (17 ft 9 in). [4] Couhat has the tonnages as 6,720 t (6,610 long tons) standard and 9,000 t (8,900 long tons) fully loaded and measuring the same length and beam but with a draught of 6.4 m (21 ft 0 in). [2]
The Don-class tenders were powered by diesel-electric system comprising four diesel engines and two electric motors turning two propeller shafts creating 6,000 kilowatts (8,000 bhp ). [2] [4] [lower-alpha 2] This gives the ships a maximum speed of 16 to 17 knots (30 to 31 km/h; 18 to 20 mph) [1] [4] and a range of 21,000 nautical miles (39,000 km; 24,000 mi) at 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph). [4] [lower-alpha 3] The tenders had an endurance of 40 days at sea. [1] The ships had a complement of 350 including 28 officers and additional crew space for up to 394 headquarters/submarine personnel. [1] [lower-alpha 4] To resupply the submarines, the vessels had a single 100-ton crane fitted at the bow, one 10-ton crane, two 5-ton cranes and two 1-ton cranes. [1] [2]
The submarine tenders had varying armament throughout their careers and between ships. The majority were armed with four single-mounted B-34USMA 100 mm (3.9 in)/56 dual-purpose guns [lower-alpha 5] and four twin-mounted ZIF 31B 57 mm (2.2 in)/70 anti-air (AA) guns. [1] [5] Viktor Kotelnikov was armed with only two 100 mm guns and Magadansky Komsomolets had none. Kamchatsky Komsomolets and Fyodor Vidyaev both ported four twin 25 mm (0.98 in)/80 AA guns. The 100 mm guns had 40° elevation and could 15 shells per minute to a distance of 16 kilometres (9.9 mi). Each shell was 15.6 kilograms (34 lb). The 57 mm guns had 90° elevation and could fire 120 rounds per minute to 8 km (5.0 mi) with each round weighing 2.8 kg (6.2 lb). The 25 mm guns had 85° elevation and could fire 270 rounds per minute to 3 km (1.9 mi). [5] Those with guns removed had instead a helicopter landing pad over the stern. [1] On the final ship of the class, an OSA-M AA missile system was installed. [1]
Those Don-class ships equipped with the 100 mm guns were given two Hawk Screech fire control radars operating on the I band. For surface search, they had Slim Net radar operating on the E/F bands, though some were equipped with Strut Curve operating only on the F band. For identification of friend or foe, they had Square Head and High Pole A systems installed. For electronic support measures, the tenders had two Watch Dog systems mounted. [4]
Seven ships were built for the Soviet Navy with one ship (Nikolay Kartashov) exported to Indonesia in 1962. Those ships that were named, were named for military personnel killed in World War II. [6] All seven ships were constructed at the Ivan Nosenko #444 Black Sea Shipyard in Nikolayev, Soviet Union. Following the expansion of stationary naval bases by the Soviet Navy, some of the vessels were converted to flagships. Fyodor Vidyaev and Dmitriy Galkin were given Vee Cone antenna for long range communications. [1] [2]

Beginning in 1958, Indonesia began a closer relationship with the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. A result of this closer relationship saw the transfer of nearly 100 naval vessels from the Soviet Union. [15] Among the ships transferred was a Don-class submarine tender, the ex Nikolay Kartashov in 1962, arriving in Indonesia in July of that year and 14 Project 613 submarines. [16] [5] Renamed KRI Ratulangi, the vessel had the same specifications as the other Don-class tenders and was armed with 100 mm, 57 mm and 25 guns. The ship was equipped with different sensors, carrying Slim Net radar for air/surface search operating on the E/F bands and RCA SPN 11 (CR-103) for surface search operating on the I/J bands and for fire control, Sun Visor B radar operating on the G/H and I bands. Ratulangi was used as a submarine support ship and escort vessel. Due to ship's heavy armament, the tender was used as a patrol vessel. [5] [17] Ratulangi was discarded in 1990, the same year the last Project 613 submarine was discarded by the Indonesian Navy. [14]
The Delfinen-class submarines were the first class of submarines constructed for the Royal Danish Navy following World War II. They were designed and built within Denmark, with first three boats of the class financed by Denmark. The fourth was financed by the United States under the Cost Share program. Constructed between 1956 and 1963, the class comprising four submarines entered service in 1961 and the last taken out of service in 1990. Replaced by the Norwegian Kobben class, three of them were scrapped while a fourth was converted into a museum ship and remains on display at the Aalborg Maritime Museum.
The Admiral Petre Bărbuneanu-class corvette is a series of four corvettes designed and constructed for the Romanian Naval Forces primarily for anti-submarine warfare. Only two corvettes out of a total of the four are still in service. Designed and constructed in the 1980s, they are a product of the Cold War with their armament and sensors based on Soviet designs. This class of corvettes was superseded by the Rear-Admiral Eustațiu Sebastian (Tetal-II) class.
The D'Estienne d'Orves-class avisos, also known as the A69 type avisos, is a class of avisos, comparable in size to a light corvette, mainly designed for coastal anti-submarine defence, but are also available for high sea escort missions. Built on a simple and robust design, they have an economical and reliable propulsion system which allows them to be used for overseas presence missions. They were initially intended for use by the French Navy, but have been ordered by the South African Navy, Argentinian Navy and Turkish Navy.
The Almirante Padilla-class frigates is a series of frigates operated by the Colombian Navy. The designation of this class is Type FS 1500 and there are four ships in service. The ships were built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) at Kiel, West Germany in the 1980s, with the first vessel commissioning in 1983 and the last in 1984. The frigates have undergone significant modification over their careers with the 2012 Orion Program Upgrade significantly modernising the vessels. Two similar ships operate as the Kasturi-class corvettes in the Royal Malaysian Navy.
The Chamsuri class are patrol boats originally constructed for and operated by the Republic of Korea Navy. They first entered service in 1979, and they have since seen service with five other navies, of which the Philippine Navy is currently the largest import user. These boats were built by the Korea Tacoma, and Korea SB & Eng. Masan shipyards. In Korea, the Chamsuri-class boats are being retired and replaced by Gumdoksuri-class patrol vessels.
The Vidar-class minelayers consists of the two ships, HNoMS Vidar and HNoMS Vale built by Mjellem & Karlsen in Bergen for the Royal Norwegian Navy in 1977 and 1978. Used as multi-role ships, the Vidar class were tasked with minelaying, personnel/cargo transport, fisheries protection, torpedo-recovery ships and as anti-submarine warfare escorts in Norwegian service. In 2003, Vale was transferred to the Latvian Navy via donation and renamed Virsaitis and used as a flagship and tender to patrol craft. In 2006, Vidar was transferred to the Lithuanian Navy and renamed Jotvingis and served as flagship and tender to mine countermeasures craft. Both vessels had their ASW equipment removed upon transfer.
The Kortenaer class was a class of anti-submarine frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Like other frigate types of the 1970s and 1980s, they featured a COGOG propulsion system with separate cruise and sprint gas turbines. Ten were built by De Schelde in Vlissingen and two by Wilton-Fijenoord in Schiedam between 1978 and 1982. Only ten served with the Royal Netherlands Navy: two were sold to Greece's Navy while still under construction and replaced by two Jacob van Heemskerck-class frigates which were an air defence variant of the Kortenaer class. The Greek frigates were renamed the Elli class. After service with the Dutch ended, eight of the frigates were sold to Greece in 1992 and the remaining two to the United Arab Emirates. Three of the ships have since been retired from active military service with one converted into the superyacht Yas.
The Claud Jones-class destroyer escorts were four destroyer escorts built for the United States Navy in the late 1950s. These ships were a diesel-powered version of the earlier Dealey class and were designed with the aim of producing a cheaper ship suitable for rapid production in wartime. These ships also had reduced armament and speed compared to their predecessors. They were not seen as effective anti-submarine warfare vessels by the United States Navy and were sold after only 15 years service to the Indonesian Navy.
The Natsushio-class submarines were a pair of submarines constructed and operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force during the Cold War. They were a development of the Hayashio-class submarines and are sometimes considered the same class. They were small and limited in capability but were thought to be a successful class. They entered service in 1963–1964 and were deleted in 1978.
The João Belo class, also known as Comandante João Belo class, is a class of four frigates of French design, based on the Commandant Rivière class but fitted for tropical service. Ordered by the Portuguese Navy in 1964, the four ships of this class were constructed at the shipyard in Nantes, France between 1965 and 1967. The first ship entered Portuguese service in 1967. The frigates were used for ocean patrol of Portuguese colonies and later, joined NATO's STANAVFORLANT unit. The first unit was discarded in 2003, followed by a second in 2004. The final two ships were taken out of service in 2008 sold to the Uruguayan Navy. The third ship was discarded in 2021, and the last ship was decommissioned on 12 August 2022.
The Asashio-class submarine is a submarine class of Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force comprising four boats. This class is the successor of Ōshio. The class were the first fleet submarines constructed for post-war Japan. The first submarine was authorized as part of the 1963 shipbuilding programme. Their design improved on previous Japanese classes by being larger to obtain better seaworthiness with greater torpedo stowage. The class entered service in the late 1960s and remained as such until the mid-1980s when they were taken out of service.
The Kuha-class minesweepers is a series of six inshore minesweepers of the Finnish Navy. The ships were constructed in 1974–1975. All the vessels of the class were modified and modernized in the late 1990s, including a lengthening of the hull. Two of the class were withdrawn from service in 2012. The rest of the class will be retired with the entry into service of the Katanpää-class mine countermeasure vessels.
The Poti class was the NATO reporting name for a group of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) corvettes built for the Soviet Navy. The Soviet designation was Project 204 small anti-submarine ships. These ships were the first Soviet warships powered by gas turbine engines; two propellers were mounted in tunnels to give a very shallow draught. A twin 57 mm (2 in) gun mounting provided self-defence. Three ships of the class were exported to Romania and six to Bulgaria during the Cold War. By 2008, all ships of the class were no longer extant.
The Ruotsinsalmi-class minelayers were a two-strong class of minelayers in the Finnish Navy. The two ships, comprising Ruotsinsalmi and Riilahti, were constructed in Finland and saw service in the Winter War and World War II. Riihahti was sunk in an engagement with Soviet motor torpedo boats on 23 August 1943. Ruotsinsalmi survived the wars and remained in service in the post war Finnish Navy until being withdrawn in the 1970s.
Project 1252 'Izmrud' were a group of three minesweepers built for the Soviet Navy in the late 1960s. The ships were a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP)-hulled version of the preceding wooden-hulled Vanya class. They were intended to be a prototype of an advanced design, instead the Soviet Navy returned to wooden-hulled minesweeper construction with the following Sonya class. Of the three minesweepers, one was lost in an explosion in 1989 and the fate of the other two is unknown.
The Miura-class landing ship tank is a class of three tank landing ships (LSTs) that served with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) from 1975 to 2002. They were primarily deployed for logistic support but were also used to carry heavy construction equipment such as trenchers.
BAP Abtao (SS-42) is an Abtao-class submarine of the Peruvian Navy. The vessel which was originally named BAP Tiburón ("Shark"), was constructed by the American Electric Boat company in the United States and launched in 1953. The Abtao class were the last submarines constructed by the United States for the export market. The submarine entered service in 1954 and by presidential decree, was renamed Abtao for the battle during the Chincha Islands War.
The Abtao class were four submarines of the Peruvian Navy that entered service between 1954 and 1957. They are also known as the Lobo class and the Dos de Mayo class and were constructed in the United States to a design based upon the United States Navy's Mackerel class. They were the last submarines to be constructed by the United States for the export market. All four submarines were powered by a diesel-electric system and armed with six 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes. Two of the submarines also mounted a 5 in (127 mm)/25 caliber gun. The four submarines, initially named for animals, were all renamed in 1957 for famous Peruvian battles. Beginning in 1991, the submarines were taken out of service, with the last decommissioned in 1999. One, BAP Abtao, is a museum ship located in Lima, Peru.
