The Ugra class was the NATO reporting name for a group of seven submarine tenders built for the Soviet Navy in the late 1960s. The Soviet designation was Project 1886. One further ship was built for the Indian Navy to a modified design. The ships were intended to provide afloat support for Soviet submarines, including supplies, water, torpedoes, fuel, and battery charging; minimal repair facilities, and were often employed as flagships/command ships for submarine squadrons. A subclass, the Borodino class, of two ships were constructed for use as training ships and lacked missiles and the ability to support submarines. Instead, the Borodino class had classrooms and training facilities.
The Ugra class were submarine tenders of the Soviet Navy designed to support eight to twelve submarines at sea, providing them with supplies, fresh water, fuel, torpedoes and repair services. [1] They were improved versions of the preceding Don class. [2] The class, named Project 1886 by the Soviets, designated the type of ship as Russian : Plavuchaya Baza meaning "Floating Base". [1] The Ugra class had extensive command and control facilities for fleet/task force commanders and were often used as flagships. [3]
Submarine tenders of the Ugra class measured 145.0 metres (475 ft 9 in) long overall with a beam of 17.7 m (58 ft 1 in) and a draught of 6.4 m (21 ft 0 in). They had a standard displacement of 6,780 tonnes (6,670 long tons ) and displaced 9,950 t (9,790 long tons) at full load. [2] On most of the vessels, the superstructure stretched aft to the funnel, [4] which was larger than that found on the Don class and the Ugra class also had a shorter funnel. [2] Along the hull, the ships had mooring points every 30 m (100 ft) and baggage ports for loading and unloading coastal craft and submarines. All of the ships had one 10-tonne capable crane and two 5-ton capable cranes. Within the ships were workshops capable of providing repair services. [4]
The vessels were powered by a diesel-electric system composed of four Kolomna 2D 42 diesel engines and two electric motors turning two shafts, creating 6,000 kilowatts (8,000 bhp ). [4] This gave the submarine tenders a maximum speed of 17 knots (31 km/h; 20 mph) and a range of 21,000 nautical miles (39,000 km; 24,000 mi) at 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph). [1] They had a complement of 450 officers and ratings. [4]
The Ugra class were armed with two quad launchers for sixteen 9K32 Strela-2 (NATO reporting name: SA-N-5 "Grail") surface-to-air missiles and four twin-mounted 57-millimetre (2.2 in)/80 anti-aircraft guns. [2] [lower-alpha 1] The ships mounted two "Muff Cob" fire control radars, one "Strut Curve" air/surface search radar and between one and three "Don-2 navigational radar. [2] They were also equipped with four "Watch Dog" electronic warfare/jamming radar, two "Square Head" and one "High Pole B" identification friend or foe antenna. [2] [4] Two ships, Ivan Kucherenko and Volga, were equipped with lattice masts for "Vee Cone" HF communications antenna. All of the ships had a small helicopter pad aft but only Ivan Kolyshkin had a hangar installed capable of supporting a Kamov Ka-25 "Hormone-C" helicopter. [2]
Seven ships were built for the Soviet Navy in Nikolayev.

The last two Russian Navy ships Vladimir Yegorov and Volga were scrapped in the late 1990s. [5]
One ship of the class was constructed for the Indian Navy. The ship was identical to the Soviet vessels except for armament and radars. Named INS Amba, the ship was commissioned on 28 December 1968 and given the pennant number A 54. Amba was armed with two 76.2 mm (3.00 in) anti-aircraft guns and equipped with one "Slim Net", two "Hawk Screech" and one "Don-2" radars. [6] Amba was decommissioned in 2006.

Two ships were completed to a modified (Project 1886U, Russian: 1886У) design as training ships. [5] Designated Russian : Uchebnoye Sudo meaning "training ship", they were named Borodino and Gangut. Instead of workshops and storerooms they had increased accommodation and training facilities. They lacked the missile air defence and no helicopter facilities but had an enlarged aft deckhouse that incorporated a navigation training space with additional navigator training positions. Both underwent a refit in Yugoslavia in 1989. [7] They were scrapped in the late 1990s. [5]

The 46 Knox-class frigates were the largest, last, and most numerous of the US Navy's second-generation anti-submarine warfare (ASW) escorts. Originally laid down as ocean escorts, they were all redesignated as frigates on 30 June 1975, in the 1975 ship reclassification plan and their hull designation changed from 'DE' to 'FF'. The Knox class was the Navy's last destroyer-type design with a steam turbine powerplant.
The Kresta II class, Soviet designation Project 1134A Berkut A, was a class of guided missile cruiser built by the Soviet Union for the Soviet Navy. The NATO lists the class as "cruisers" mainly due to the Metel anti-ship missile system capable to strike not only submarines but also surface vessels. They were succeeded by the larger Kara class cruisers.
Caio Duilio was an Andrea Doria-class helicopter cruiser of the Marina Militare. Built by Navalmeccanica at Castellammare di Stabia, it was named after the Roman consul Gaius Duilius.

The Stenka class is the NATO reporting name for a class of patrol boats built for the Soviet Navy, KGB Border Troops and Soviet Allies. The Soviet designation was Project 205P Tarantul. The boats are an anti-submarine patrol version of the Osa-class missile boat.
The Don-class submarine tender was the NATO reporting name for a group of seven submarine tenders built for the Soviet Navy in the late 1950s. The Soviet designation was Project 310 Batur. Evolving from a need for dispersed basing of submarines in the advent of a nuclear war, the ships were designed to support distant operations of the Soviet Union's submarine fleet, capable of repairing and resupplying. However, the Soviets returned to stationary basing of their submarines and the Don class were later converted into flagships. One vessel was exported to Indonesia in 1962 and due to the ship's heavy armament, was used primarily for patrol duties. The ships of the Don class were removed from service in the mid 1990s and broken up for scrap.
Bodryy was a Project 135 Burevestnik-class Large Anti-Submarine Ship or Krivak-class frigate. Launched on 15 April 1971, the vessel served with the Soviet Navy until it was dissolved and then was transferred to the Russian Navy. The ship played a key role in helping the Soviets develop techniques for tracking ballistic missile submarines in the 1970s. Bodryy was retired on 17 July 1997 and scrapped.
Zadornyy was a Project 1135 Burevestnik-class guard ship or Krivak-class frigate that served with the Soviet and Russian Navies. Displacing 3,200 tonnes full load, the vessel was built around the Metel anti-submarine missile system. Zadornyy was launched on 25 March 1979 in Leningrad, the last of the class to be built by the A.A. Zhdanov shipyard, and served with the Northern Fleet. After taking part in exercises Avangard-81, Sever-81 and Okean-83, and cruising as far as Havana, Cuba, the vessel was upgraded between 11 June 1990 and 23 May 1995 with missiles that added anti-ship capability. While serving with the Russian Navy, the ship took part in joint exercises with frigates of the Royal Navy, including a commemoration of the first Arctic convoy of the Second World War with HMS Campbeltown. After more than twenty-five years service, the ship was decommissioned on 3 December 2005.
Retivyy was a Project 1135 Burevestnik-class Guard Ship or Krivak-class frigate. With an armament based around the URPK-4 Metel anti-submarine missile system, the vessel served with the Pacific Fleet of the Soviet and Russian Navies. The ship was launched on 14 August 1976 by A.A. Zhdanov in Leningrad, the second of the class built by the shipyard. After joining the fleet, the vessel took part in the search for the crew of the crashed Lockheed P-3 Orion AF 586. In 1981, the vessel sailed as part of a task force along the west coast of the United States to test and measure American defences. Decommissioned on 4 August 1995, the vessel was subsequently sold to a South Korean company to be broken up.
Admiral Zozulya was the lead ship of the Soviet Navy Project 1134 Admiral Zozulya-class Large Anti-submarine Ship also known as the Kresta I Class guided missile cruisers. Launched in 1965, the ship was reclassified a Large Rocket Ship in 1977. Admiral Zozulya served primarily in the Northern Fleet during the Cold War, transferring to the Russian Navy at the dissolution of the Soviet Navy, and was decommissioned in 1994 after nearly thirty years of service.
Vitse-Admiral Drozd was the third ship of the Project 1134 Berkut Large Anti-submarine Ships built for the Soviet Navy, also known as the 'Kresta I'-class or Admiral Zozulya-class guided missile cruisers. The vessel was commissioned in 1968 and served with the Baltic and Northern Fleets through the 1970s and 1980s. As well as taking part in naval exercises in the Atlantic, the ship assisted in the rescue of the crew of the stricken submarine K-19 in 1972. As a consequence, the ship was named in the Northern Fleet's book of honour. The vessel was reclassified a Large Rocket Ship in 1977 to reflect its multi-purpose capability. After an upgrade in 1981, Vitse-Admiral Drozd continued to operate in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The vessel observed the 1986 United States bombing of Libya and undertook good will visits to Annaba, Algeria, and Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, as well as Tripoli and Tobruk. After being decommissioned in 1990, the ship was sent to India to be broken up in 1992 but sank en route.
Marshal Voroshilov was a Project 1134A Berkut A class cruiser of the Soviet Navy, which briefly became part of the Russian Navy after being renamed Khabarovsk in 1991. The fifth ship of her class, the ship served mostly during the Cold War, from 1973 to 1992.
Vladivostok was the second Soviet Navy Project 1134 Berkut Large Anti-submarine Ship also known as a Admiral Zozulya-class guided missile cruiser or by the NATO reporting name Kresta I. Launched in August 1966, the ship was reclassified a Large Rocket Ship in August 1978 to reflect the wide-ranging capability of the vessel. Serving primarily in the Pacific Fleet during the Cold War, Vladivostok took part in exercises and tours that demonstrated Soviet naval power in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The ship played a part at a number of points of potential escalation in the Cold War, including the Indo-Pakistani War of December 1971, the Mozambican Civil War in 1980 and the collision between the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk and the submarine K-314 in March 1984. Vladivostok was taken out of service to be modernised and updated in September 1988 but there were insufficient funds to complete the work. Instead the ship was decommissioned in April 1990 and, the following January, sold to an Australian company to be broken up.
Svirepyy was a Project 1135 Burevestnik-class Large Anti-Submarine Ship or Krivak-class frigate that served with the Soviet Navy. Displacing 3,200 tonnes full load, the vessel was built around the Metel anti-submarine missile system. The ship was launched on 27 January 1971 in Kaliningrad and joined the Baltic Fleet. The ship's service was not restricted to the Baltic Sea and instead travelled widely, visiting a number of foreign friendly ports during the next two decades, including Gdynia, Poland and Havana, Cuba. Svirepyy was designated a Guard Ship from 1977 as Soviet strategy changed to one creating safe areas for friendly submarines close to the coast. However, the ship continued to travel widely, including trips to the capital cities of both Finland and Tunisia as well as Rostock in East Germany. Svirepyy was transferred to the Russian Navy after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, but did not last long before being decommissioned on 30 June 1993 and subsequently broken up.

Viktor Kotelnikov was a Don-class submarine tender of the Soviet Navy.
Revnostnyy was a Project 1135M Burevestnik-class Guard Ship or 'Krivak' class frigate that served with the Soviet Navy. Launched on 23 April 1980, the vessel operated as part of the Pacific Fleet as an anti-submarine vessel, with an armament built around the Metel Anti-Ship Complex. Revnostnyy patrolled extensively as far afield as the Arabian Peninsula and Sea of Japan. The ship undertook a friendly visit to India in 1984 and, during the following year, formed part of the escort for a flotilla led by the Soviet aircraft carrier Novorossiysk which helped develop Soviet tactics for carrier-borne aircraft. Taken out of service for an overhaul in 1988, Revnostnyy was instead placed in reserve until 24 July 2003, when the ship was decommissioned and sold to be broken up.
Ryavnyy was a Project 1135M Burevestnik-class Guard Ship or 'Krivak II' class frigate that served with the Soviet Navy. Launched on 1 September 1979, the vessel operated as part of the Pacific Fleet as an anti-submarine vessel, with an armament built around the Metel Anti-Ship Complex. Ryavnyy took part in operations in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and undertook visits to countries friendly to the Soviet Union. The ship spent time in the Seychelles and North Yemen in 1982 and North Korea in 1985 and 1986. Taken out of service for an overhaul in 1989, Ryavnyy was instead placed in reserve until 17 July 1997, when the ship was decommissioned and sold to be broken up.
Gordelivy was a Project 1135M Burevestnik-class Guard Ship or 'Krivak II'-class frigate that served with the Soviet and Russian Navies. Launched on 3 May 1978, the vessel operated as part of the Pacific Fleet as an anti-submarine vessel, with an armament built around the Metel Anti-Ship Complex. Gordelivy operated in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The ship was involved in the recovery of a BOR-4 prototype spaceplane in 1982 and undertook a friendly visit to Mumbia, India, in 1985. Decommissioned and sold to a South Korean company in 1994, Gordelivy left Russia on 27 June 1995 to be broken up.
