The City of Botany Bay was a local government area in the Eastern Suburbs region of Sydney,in the state of New South Wales,Australia. The area encompassed the suburbs to the north of Botany Bay,such as Botany. First proclaimed in 1888 as the "Borough of Botany",the council became the "Municipality of Botany" from 1906 to 1996,when it was proclaimed a city as the "City of Botany Bay".

Born the son of Irish migrants in Redfern,Cahill worked for the New South Wales Government Railways from the age of 16 before joining the Australian Labor Party. Being a prominent unionist organiser,including being dismissed for his role in the 1917 general strike,Cahill was elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for St George in 1925.

Robert James Heffron,also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron,was a long-serving New South Wales politician,union organiser and Labor Party Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand,Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. A prominent unionist organiser,we was gaoled for "conspiracy to strike action". He was later elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Botany in 1930. However his disputes with party leader Jack Lang led to his expulsion from the ALP in 1936 and Heffron formed his own party from disgruntled Labor MPs known as the Industrial Labor Party. The success of his party enabled his readmission to the party and his prominence in a post-Lang NSW Branch which won office in 1941.
Carmel Mary Tebbutt is an Australian former politician. She was the Labor Party Member for the former seat of Marrickville in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly until the 2015 election and was Deputy Premier of New South Wales from 2008 to 2011. She was also Minister for Health in the Keneally Government. She is the first woman to hold the position of Deputy Premier of New South Wales.

J J Cahill Memorial High School is a public co-educational secondary day school,located on Sutherland Street in Mascot,an inner southern suburb of Sydney,New South Wales,Australia. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education with students from Year 7 to Year 12. Established in 1961 as a comprehensive high school,the school was named in honour of John Joseph Cahill,the local member of parliament and the Premier of New South Wales from 1952 to his death in 1959. The school is one of four NSW state schools with "memorial" in its name,alongside Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School in Tenterfield,Hay War Memorial High School,and Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth.
A by-election occurred for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Heffron on Saturday 25 August 2012. This was triggered by the resignation of former Premier of New South Wales Kristina Keneally (Labor) which she announced on 23 June 2012. Labor easily retained the seat with an increased margin. Ron Hoenig received a 60 percent primary and 70 percent two-candidate preferred vote.
Ben Keneally is an Australian management consultant and politician. He was the Mayor of Botany Bay from 2012 to 2016. His wife is the former NSW Premier and former Senator Kristina Keneally.
A by-election for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Sydney was held on Saturday 27 October 2012. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of independent MP Clover Moore due to the legislation preventing dual membership of state parliament and local council.
