Stotlers Crossroads is a small unincorporated community hamlet in southeastern Morgan County, West Virginia. [1] It is situated along Winchester Grade Road (CR 13) between the South and Middle Forks of Sleepy Creek on the eastern flanks of Highland Ridge (942 feet).
In law, an unincorporated area is a region of land that is not governed by a local municipal corporation; similarly an unincorporated community is a settlement that is not governed by its own local municipal corporation, but rather is administered as part of larger administrative divisions, such as a township, parish, borough, county, city, canton, state, province or country. Occasionally, municipalities dissolve or disincorporate, which may happen if they become fiscally insolvent, and services become the responsibility of a higher administration. Widespread unincorporated communities and areas are a distinguishing feature of the United States and Canada. In most other countries of the world, there are either no unincorporated areas at all, or these are very rare; typically remote, outlying, sparsely populated or uninhabited areas.
A hamlet is a small human settlement. In different jurisdictions and geographies, hamlets may be the size of a town, village or parish, be considered a smaller settlement or subdivision or satellite entity to a larger settlement. The word and concept of a hamlet have roots in the Anglo-Norman settlement of England, where the old French hamlet came to apply to small human settlements. In British geography, a hamlet is considered smaller than a village and distinctly without a church.
Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,541. Its county seat is Berkeley Springs. The county was formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, prominent soldier of the American Revolutionary War.
The community was named after W. R. Stotler, a merchant at the namesake crossroads. [2] Stotlers Crossroads is the location of several historic buildings, including the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church (1888) and Ambrose Chapel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [3]
Ambrose Chapel is a historic Methodist chapel located at Stotlers Crossroads, Morgan County, West Virginia. The land was deeded for a free meeting house for anyone who preached the gospel of Jesus Christ, in 1797 by (William) Henry Ambrose. The original building was a log structure and was later replaced. The current Chapel was built in 1851 and is a 1 1/2-story rectangular building with hewn log framing, stone foundation, clapboard siding, and metal roof. Also on the property is a cemetery with over 300 burials dating from the early 19th century to about 1945. During the American Civil War it was used as a Confederate field hospital in January, 1862 during Stonewall Jackson's Bath Romney Campaign.
The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance. A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred in preserving the property.
Stotlers Crossroads is a junction of Winchester Grade Road (CR 13) with the Virginia Line and Highland Ridge Roads (CR 8).
