Swimming at the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival

Swimming has featured as a sport at the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival since its first edition in 1991. It has appeared on the programme at every subsequent edition of the biennial multi-sport event for European athletes under the age of 18.

The European Junior Swimming Championships is an annual swimming competition for European swimmers organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation and held over five days. The competitor age for females was 15 to 16 years; for males it is 17 to 18 years until 2015. From 2016 the competitor age is for females 14 to 17 years and for males 15 to 18 years.

The South American U18 Championships in Athletics is a biennial athletics event organized by "Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo" (CONSUDATLE), the South American area association of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). Starting in 1973, the competition was open for athletes under-17 in the early years. Since 2000 the international age group definition has applied. Up until the 2016 edition the competition was known as the South American Youth Championships in Athletics. The tournament is open for athletes from CONSUDATLE member federations. Athletes from IAAF members of other geographical areas may be invited. However, they are not considered in the classification.

Artem Honcharenko is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and in individual medley events. Honcharenko competed in three swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He eclipsed a FINA B-cut of 2:04.30 from the Belarus Championships in Minsk. On the first day of the Games, Honcharenko teamed up with Vyacheslav Shyrshov, Pavlo Khnykin, and the late Rostyslav Svanidze in the 4×100 m freestyle relay. Honcharenko swam the third leg in heat three and recorded a split of 49.98, but the Ukrainians settled only for fourth place and twelfth overall with a final time of 3:21.48. Three days later, Honcharenko, along with Svanidze, Ihor Snitko, and Serhiy Fesenko, placed fourteenth in the 4×200 m freestyle relay with a time of 7:32.16. In his final event, 200 m individual medley, Honcharenko placed thirty-first on the morning prelims. Swimming in heat four, he pulled off a fifth-place effort with a much faster freestyle leg in 2:05.98, a 1.68-second deficit off his entry time.

Andrei Pakin is a Kyrgyzstani former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle and in individual medley events. Pakin competed in two swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He eclipsed a FINA B-cut of 2:09.26 from the Russian Open Championships in Saint Petersburg. In the 4×200 m freestyle relay, Pakin, along with Aleksandr Shilin, Ivan Ivanov, and Russian import Dmitri Kuzmin, were disqualified from heat one for an early takeoff during the lead-off leg. The following day, in the 200 m individual medley, Pakin placed fortieth on the morning prelims. He posted a sterling time of 2:07.88 to overhaul a fast-pacing George Gleason of the Virgin Islands at the final turn and blister a top finish in heat one.

Chantal Zita Gibney is an Irish former competitive swimmer who specialised in sprint and middle-distance freestyle events. Gibney became a semi-finalist in the 200-metre freestyle at the European Championships, and later represented Ireland, as a 19-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She also holds numerous Irish records, long or short course, in a middle-distance freestyle double, and fifteen All-American honours, while attending the University of Florida.

Anna Korshikova is a Kyrgyz former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events. Korshikova competed in two swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 2:05.61 from the Russian Open Championships in Saint Petersburg. On the third day of the Games, Korshikova placed thirty-fifth in the 200 m freestyle. Swimming in heat two, she enjoyed the race with an early lead, but faded shortly to a fourth seed in 2:08.08, over three body lengths behind leader Lára Hrund Bjargardóttir of Iceland. Two days later, Korshikova, along with Yekaterina Tochenaya, Nataliya Korabelnikova, and Anjelika Solovieva, placed fourteenth in the 4×200 m freestyle relay (8:41.21).

Nataliya Korabelnikova is a Kyrgyz former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events. Korabelnikova competed in two swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 4:24.63 from the Russian Open Championships in Saint Petersburg. On the second day of the Games, Korabelnikova placed thirty-fifth in the 400 m freestyle. Swimming in heat one, she edged out Singapore's Christel Bouvron on the final lap to pick up a fifth seed by almost a full second, in a lifetime best of 4:24.29. Three days later, Korabelnikova, along with Yekaterina Tochenaya, Anna Korshikova, and Anjelika Solovieva, placed fourteenth in the 4×200 m freestyle relay (8:41.21).

Nadiya Beshevli is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. She represented Ukraine, as an 18-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and held numerous Ukrainian titles and meet records in the freestyle relays and backstroke double.

Anjelika Solovieva is a Kyrgyz former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. Solovieva competed in two swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 1:06.33 from the Kazakhstan Open Championships in Almaty. On the second day of the Games, Solovieva placed forty-fourth in the 100 m backstroke. Swimming in heat one, she faded down the stretch to pick up a fifth seed in 1:07.63, exactly 1.3 seconds below her entry standard and 1.15 behind leader Lizza Danila of the Philippines. Three days later, Solovieva, along with Yekaterina Tochenaya, Anna Korshikova, and Nataliya Korabelnikova, placed fourteenth in the 4×200 m freestyle relay (8:41.21).

Aleksandr Shilin is a Russian-born Kyrgyzstani former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle and sprint backstroke events. He represented his adopted nation Kyrgyzstan at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and posted top-ten times in 50 m backstroke from the European and Russian Swimming Masters.

Athletics has featured as a sport at the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival since its first edition in 1991. It has appeared on the programme at every subsequent edition of the biennial multi-sport event for European athletes under the age of 18. This age group corresponds with the youth category of athletics competition. However, during the games 2013, 2015 and 2017, the age group was changed to only include athletes under the age of 17. From the Baku games in 2019, the under-18 is again the age standard. That is, athletes must be either at the age of 16 or 17 of the year of the festival.

Georgia Coates is a British swimmer who won five medals at the 2015 European Games. She has been selected to compete for Great Britain at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Swimming at the 2019 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival was held at the Baku Aquatics Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 22 to 26 July 2019.
