Turkish Airlines Flight 452 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight operated by a Boeing 727-2F2 of Turkish Airlines that crashed near Isparta on 19 September 1976 while en route from Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST/LTBA) to Antalya Airport (AYT/LTAI), killing all 154 occupants on board. The crash is the deadliest aviation accident in Turkey's history.
The aircraft arrived in Istanbul from Italy and took off again at 22:45 local time. The pilots started descending towards Antalya at 23:11 with the captain in the passenger cabin. The plane crashed at around 23:20 into the Karatepe Hill near Isparta, about 100 kilometres (62 mi; 54 nmi) from the destination, after the first officer mistook the city lights of Isparta for the runway of Antalya Airport, despite warnings from the controller at Antalya.
Most passengers were heading to Antalya for vacation and were not Turkish. The bodies of 18 Italian victims were buried at a cemetery near Isparta instead of being sent to Italy. A member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey also died in the crash.
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 727-2F2 [lower-alpha 1] registered as TC-JBH with serial number 20982 and line number 1087. The aircraft first flew on 11 November 1974. [2] The plane was delivered to the airline on 1 December. [3] TC-JBH was named Antalya , coincidentally the destination of the flight. [4] The captain was Celâl Topçuoğlu and the first officer was Sacit Soğangöz. Also on board were flight engineer Ahmet Bursalı and technician Muhittin Güçlü. The four cabin crew members were Feyzan Güngör, Neriman Düzelli, Kâmuran Küçükkoşum and Canan Dinç. Three Turkish Airlines employees, scheduled to fly a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 from Antalya to Istanbul the next morning, were also deadheading on the flight. [5]
The plane arrived at Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST/LTBA) from Italy at 21:30 local time with 68 passengers. 78 more passengers boarded at Istanbul and the plane took off towards Antalya Airport at 22:45 with a delay of 35 minutes. [5] Most of the additional passengers came from another Istanbul–Antalya flight which was initially scheduled to depart at 21:45, but was merged with Flight 452 instead due to the many empty seats in the Boeing 727. [6]
At 23:11, the pilots reported that they could see the lights of the city, while the plane was around 100 kilometres (62 mi) north of it. [7] 30 minutes after takeoff, they announced they were approaching Antalya Airport and would descend from 4,400 metres (14,400 ft) to 4,000 metres (13,000 ft). [5] When the pilots confirmed they had the runway in sight, the controller at Antalya notified them that he couldn't see them. First Officer Soğangöz responded: "Should I believe you, or my eyes?" Captain Topçuoğlu, who was in the passenger cabin, returned to the cockpit after realizing that something was wrong at an altitude of 150 metres (490 ft) and gave full throttle when he saw the hill ahead. Eyewitnesses reported that the plane flew very close to the city and that they could "almost see the passengers". The aircraft passed the Sidre Tepe Hill near Isparta, after which it started to climb. [9] At 23:20, a loud explosion was heard from Karatepe, the hill after Sidre Tepe. [5] The aircraft crashed its right wing in a hill, following which it bounced off to the other side of the valley and disintegrated. [8] The wreckage was at an approximate altitude of 1,130 metres (3,710 ft). [10] At the time of the accident, a horror film was being aired on television, causing some locals to leave their homes after the explosion. [11]

The impact shattered the aircraft wreckage over an area of 2 kilometres (1.2 mi). After hearing the explosion, nearby residents climbed to the top of the hill for two hours. Military personnel were dispatched to the area and were already on the scene. They found pieces of the aircraft on fire and extinguished them by throwing sand atop. One of the wings was found on top of the hill, while the engines were located at the bottom. A generator was used to light up the site at night. To prevent the looting of items, officials closed the area to civilians, despite which thousands of people went up the hill and were able to see the wreckage and bodies after midnight. The first flight recorder was found the day after the accident. [11] The flight data recorder was found on 22 September. [12] In 2009, some remains of the plane were still found at the crash site. [8]
A total of 155 people, 144 passengers and 11 Turkish Airlines employees, were killed in the accident. 125 of those passengers were of non-Turkish descent, [5] largely being Italian tourists. Among the victims was Kemal Ziya Öztürk , an independent member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey from the Aydın district and the father of aviator Murat Öztürk. [11] [13] The crash also claimed the life of the former Italian soldier and recipient of the Gold Medal of Military Valour, Enrico Martini. İlhan Cavcav was on board the aircraft on the first leg and was also due to continue with the flight to Antalya but changed his mind and flew to Ankara instead. [13]
According to eyewitnesses, the bodies of victims were badly burned, making identification impossible. [11] While most bodies of Italian victims were sent to Italy, 18 of the Italian passengers were buried at a local cemetery, [14] as were all unidentified bodies. [6] As of September 2024 [update] , the crash is the deadliest aviation accident to occur in Turkey. [2]
Initial eyewitnesses gave conflicting accounts of the accident; some claimed the aircraft exploded mid-air or that the aircraft was on-fire. [15] The day following the crash, a lightning strike was eliminated as a cause for the accident, based on the weather reports. [11] Investigators accessed the cockpit voice recorder on 22 September, the transcript of which was kept secret. [12] Just 4 days after the accident, Minister of Transport Nahit Menteşe said that while no report was ready, initial findings suggested a pilot error caused the accident, as the aircraft had started its descent too early. [16] The experts inspecting the recordings later announced that the pilots were trying to fly visually, instead of instrumental flight, which was required at night, and that they mistook the dark area ahead of them—the Western Taurus Mountains—for the Mediterranean Sea [17] and the city lights of Isparta for those of Antalya. [7] It was also revealed that the distance measuring equipment of Antalya Airport broke three days before the crash. [18]

Turkish Airlines Flight 981 (TK981/THY981) was a scheduled flight from Istanbul Yeşilköy Airport to London Heathrow Airport, with an intermediate stop at Orly Airport in Paris. On 3 March 1974, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 operating the flight crashed into the Ermenonville Forest, 37.76 kilometres (23.46 mi) outside Paris, killing all 335 passengers and 11 crew on board. AtlasGlobal, named Atlasjet until 31 March 2015, was a Turkish airline headquartered in Istanbul, which operated scheduled domestic and international passenger services as well as charter flights, mostly out of its base at Istanbul Airport. The airline filed for bankruptcy on February 12, 2020, and ceased operations permanently after that date.
Atlasjet Flight 4203 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Istanbul Atatürk Airport in Istanbul to Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport in Isparta Province, Turkey. On 30 November 2007, the aircraft operating the flight – a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 which Atlasjet had leased from World Focus Airlines just five months before – crashed in the vicinity of Keçiborlu between the villages of Yenitepe and Çukurören while on approach, approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) west of the destination airport. The flight had taken off from Istanbul at 00:51 EET with 50 passengers and 7 crew members on board. All 57 occupants perished in the accident.
Turkish Airlines Flight 634 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to Diyarbakır Airport in southeastern Turkey. On 8 January 2003 at 20:19 EET, the aircraft operating the flight, a British Aerospace Avro RJ100, struck the ground on final approach approximately 900 metres (3,000 ft) short of the runway threshold during inclement weather conditions. In the following collision with a slope, a post-crash fire broke out, killing 75 of the 80 occupants, including the entire crew. This is the deadliest aviation accident to involve the BAe 146.
Turkish Airlines Flight 158 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Istanbul Yeşilköy Airport to Ankara Esenboğa Airport, Turkey. On 16 January 1983, the aircraft operating the flight, a Boeing 727-200, landed about 50 metres (160 ft) short of the runway at its destination airport in driving snow, broke up, and caught fire. Of the 67 occupants on board, 47 perished.
Turkish Airlines Flight 1951 was a passenger flight that crashed during landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the Netherlands, on 25 February 2009, resulting in the deaths of nine passengers and crew, including all three pilots.
Turkish Airlines Flight 301 was a passenger flight operated by a Fokker F28-1000 Fellowship of Turkish Airlines registered as TC-JAO that crashed during takeoff at İzmir Cumaovası Airport on 26 January 1974 while en route to Istanbul Yeşilköy Airport, killing 67 of its 73 passengers and crew.
On 8 March 1962, a Fairchild F-27 of Turkish Airlines registered as TC-KOP, crashed into Mount Medetsiz while en route from Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB/LTAC) to Adana Airport (ADA/LTAF), killing all eight passengers and three crew members on board. The aircraft was descending into Adana when it encountered cumulus clouds, leading the pilots to fly around them and change their altitude accordingly. It is believed that the pilots lost track of their location and altitude while doing so, causing the plane to crash into the bottom of an abyss at the mountain. The location of the wreckage and harsh weather conditions meant that the rescue team was not able to reach the accident site until 11 March, while local villagers managed to reach it a day prior.
On 11 March 2018, a Bombardier Challenger 604 private jet, owned by Turkish group Başaran Holding, crashed in the Zagros Mountains near Shahr-e Kord, Iran, while returning to Istanbul from Sharjah. All three crew members and eight passengers on board were killed.
Pegasus Airlines Flight 2193 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Izmir to Istanbul in Turkey operated by Pegasus Airlines. On 5 February 2020, the Boeing 737-800 operating the route skidded off the runway while landing at Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, Turkey. Three people were killed, 179 people were injured, and the aircraft was destroyed. It was the first fatal accident in the airline's history. The accident came less than a month after another Pegasus Airlines accident involving a Boeing 737 skidding off the runway at the same airport.
As of September 2024, Turkish Airlines operates a fleet of 373 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. The airline started its operations in 1933 with only five planes. In 1945, the airline bought over 30 cheap Douglas DC-3 and Douglas C-47s used in the Second World War from the United States of America. The DC-3s had numerous issues regarding their safety but remained in the fleet until 1967. The first jet-engined aircraft, a leased McDonnell Douglas DC-9, joined the fleet in the same year. In 1972, several McDonnell Douglas DC-10s were acquired, becoming the first wide-body aircraft of the carrier. Fokker F28 Fellowships also joined the fleet the same year. Boeing 727s were added two years later. With the Airbus A310 joining in 1985, Douglas DC-10 and Fokker F28s were transferred to Boğaziçi Hava Taşımacılığı to standardize the fleet. After evaluating the Boeing 747, McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the Airbus A340, the carrier chose the latter as the replacement of the DC-10.
On 21 January 1972, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 registered as TC-JAC operated by Turkish Airlines crashed on approach while trying to make an emergency landing at Adana Airport. The aircraft was en-route from Kandara Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Ankara Esenboğa Airport with a stopover at Damascus Airport with only five crew members on board after carrying passengers to Hajj the day before.
