Uttarkashi is a town and the headquarters of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, India.
Uttarkashi is located at 30°44′N78°27′E / 30.73°N 78.45°E . [1] It has an average elevation of 1,165 metres (3,822 ft).[ citation needed ]
As of 2001 [update] India census, [2] Uttarkashi city had a population of 40,220. Males constitute 57% of the population and females 43%. Uttarkashi has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 71%. In Uttarkashi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
On November 12, 2023, 41 construction workers at Uttarkashi Tunnel in Uttarakhand were trapped in the tunnel by a collapse. On 28 November all workers were rescued. [3]
