The final of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy was played on 23 June 2013 between the England and India at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham.This was the 7th ICC Champions Trophy. India won the match by 5 runs England qualified into the final by defeating South Africa in the first semi-final at The Oval, London on 19 June 2013. India made their way into the final after defeating Sri Lanka in the second semi-final played at SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff on 20 June 2013. The match was delayed almost six hours due to rain and started at 16:20 local time, and the match was reduced to 20 overs per innings. So all the rules of this match were the same as a Twenty20 game. It was India's 2nd ICC Champions Trophy championship after the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy. But they had to share the honour with Sri Lanka since this was a joint championship winning. So this was the first time when India won that title individually. In addition India became the second team after Australia to win the ICC Champions Trophy more than one time. Ravindra Jadeja earned the man of the match award for scoring 33 runs and taking 2 wickets in the match. Shikhar Dhawan was named the man of the series for scoring 363 runs in the tournament.

The Indian cricket team toured Sri Lanka from 6 August to 1 September 2015 to play a tour match and three Test matches. On 27 June 2015, Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara said he would retire from international cricket after the second Test of the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket Board confirmed the schedule of India's tour to Sri Lanka in August to September 2015. The tour started with a three-day warm-up game against Sri Lanka Board President's XI, followed by three Test matches. The Test matches were played at Galle, P Sara Oval, and SSC Colombo. The Indian team arrived in Sri Lanka on 4 August 2015.

The 2020 Indian Premier League was the thirteenth season of the Indian Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket (T20) league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. The tournament was originally scheduled to commence on 29 March 2020, but was suspended until 15 April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on 14 April that the lockdown in India would last until at least 3 May 2020, the BCCI suspended the tournament indefinitely. In December 2018, the team changed its name from the Delhi Daredevils. The Capitals started their campaign with a 37 run victory over three-time champions Mumbai. The Capitals finally entered the playoffs after 7 years, and they won their first-ever playoffs match. The Capitals ended up as 2nd runners-up in the playoffs.

However, on 25 September 2019, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cancelled the Zimbabwe series following the International Cricket Council's (ICC) suspension of Zimbabwe Cricket. Sri Lanka were confirmed as their replacement for the tour. All of the formats, venues and dates remained the same. India won the series 3–0.
