Janakpuri is an affluent neighborhood in the South West district of Delhi, India. It is located near the Delhi Cantonment area and is accessible by road and Delhi Metro via multiple lines .
Janakpuri was planned as the largest residential colony in Asia in late 1960s and has a large number of parks in each pocket of the locality. The Janakpuri District Park, in the middle of the Colony, is a managed green land-mass.[ citation needed ]
The present geographical structure of the Janakpuri constituency came into existence in 2008 as a part of the implementation of the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India constituted in 2002.
The Locality falls under Category 'D' of residential colonies in Delhi alongside other Category 'D' colonies of National Capital Territory of Delhi. [1]
The main commercial centre is the Janakpuri District Centre which houses various regional offices of companies and firms as well as shops selling food, apparel, handicrafts and jewellery. A "crafts bazaar" within the complex sells handicrafts and home decor items. [2]
Janakpuri is a part of the South West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency along with nine other Vidhan Sabha segments.
Besides small and medium-sized hospitals and medical centres, Janakpuri Super Speciality Hospital, a 300 bedded medical facility, has been operational since September 2008.[ citation needed ]
Janakpuri also has Bharati College, an all girls undergraduate college under Delhi University and Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology under GGSIPU.[ citation needed ]
Janakpuri Delhi Haat, the third Delhi Haat in Delhi and the largest amongst all three has also been set up here.[ citation needed ]
The Delhi Metro has three metro stations in Janakpuri ( Dabri Mor-Janak Puri South, Janak Puri East, Janak Puri West), one station each on the blue line and magenta line and one on both. Also, Under the third phase, Janak Puri got a new underground station, Dabri Mor metro station near the DDA Park in C2 Area, on the Magenta Line (Janakpuri(W) - Botanical Garden) which has been opened for public on 29 May 2018. This corridor will have the first driverless train in Delhi Metro Network. [3] [4] Janakpuri West Metro Station has been expanded to accommodate the new Magenta Line. Janakpuri West Metro Station has India's Highest Escalators. It is 15.6 meters high (equivalent to a 5 storey building) and 35.3 meters long. [5]
It is also connected by the Outer Ring Road to parts of Northwest and North Delhi like Rohini, Pitampura, and Wazirabad through elevated corridors.
The Hari Nagar Bus Depot is located in the vicinity.
The neighbourhood is home to schools like Mira Model School, D.T.E.A. Sr. Sec. School, St. Marks Sr. Sec. Public School, St. Francis de Sales School, SS Mota Singh School, Lawrence Public School, Sumermal Jain Public School and Happy Model School along with DU College like Bharti College.
The Tihar Central Jail was set up in 1958 on the land of Tihar in Janakpuri. In the beginning, only one Central Jail was commissioned with the lodging capacity of 1273 prisoners. The prison population gradually grew and today as many as 11,000 inmates are lodged here. Tihar CJ is the largest prison complex in Asia. The prison complex has nine central jails apart from a District Jail at Rohini, which was commissioned in 2004. [6]
Dilli Haat is a paid-entrance open-air market, food plaza, and craft bazaar located in Delhi. The area is run by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), and unlike the traditional weekly market, the village Haat, Dilli Haat is permanent. It is located in the commercial centres of South Delhi, opposite INA market. The 6 acres of land on which this complex is situated was salvaged as part of a reclamation project and transformed into a plaza. Extensive foundation work, small thatched roof cottages and kiosks give the plaza a village atmosphere. Some shops are permanent but other sellers are rotated, usually for fifteen days. Products offered may include rosewood and sandalwood carvings, embellished camel hide footwear, sophisticated fabric and drapery, gems, beads, brassware, metal crafts, and silk & wool fabrics. A number of shows promoting handicrafts and handlooms are held at the exhibition hall in the complex. To sell wares, there is an application process; spaces are allocated according to which state the seller is from. In all, Dilli Haat, INA Market has 62 stalls allotted on a rotational basis to craftsmen for a payment of INR 100 per day for a maximum period of 15 days.
