Dwarka [1] [2] [3] is a neighbourhood located in Southwestern edge of Indian Capital New Delhi in South West Delhi district of the NCT of Delhi. The district court that functions under the Delhi High Court for South West Delhi is located in Dwarka.
The sub-city is close to Indira Gandhi International Airport and the Millenium City of Gurugram in Haryana in the NCR region. It is among the largest sub-city in Asia. Dwarka is organized into sectors and mainly has Cooperative Group Housing Societies as residential options. It is one of the most sought-after residential areas in Delhi. [4] [5] The sub-city also has the largest rooftop solar plant in the Union territory of Delhi. [6] [7]
In January 2017, the Cabinet of India approved Dwarka to be the second Diplomatic Enclave [2] [3] for 39 countries on 34 hectares, [8] after Chanakyapuri. [8] [9] [10] In 2016, the Cabinet of India, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved 89.72 hectares of land for an Exhibition-cum Convention centre, [11] [12] estimated to cost ₹260 billion (US$3.1 billion). [13]
Dwarka is being developed as a smart city under Delhi Development Authority's ‘smart sub-city’ project. [14] Dwarka (Delhi Assembly constituency) and Matiala (Delhi Assembly constituency) both represent Dwarka sub-city and are one of the 70 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of Delhi.
Dwarka is named after the legendary Dwaraka kingdom. It is a short distance away from Gurgaon which is a major hub for large national and multinational corporations in the country and about 10 km away from Indira Gandhi International Airport. With the opening up of the Airport Express Line in 2011, [15] the travel time from the Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station to Airport was reduced to less than 10 minutes.
Some parts of modern-day Dwarka historically came under the colony of Pappankalan, which are now being developed under the 'Urban Expansion Projects' of the Delhi Development Authority. [16]
Dwarka Baoli (also known as Loharehri Baoli) is a historical stepwell recently discovered in Dwarka Sub City, in South West Delhi, India. An elaborate conservation project by the India National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach) for the Lodi-era baoli was completed recently. It was constructed for the residents of Loharehri village by the Sultans of the Lodi Dynasty in the early 16th century. Dwarka now stands where the Loharehri village once stood.
In 2019, Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh inaugurated India's first [17] National Cyber Forensic Lab which is part of the National Cyber Coordination Centre and Cyber Protection Awareness and Detection Center (Cypad) of Delhi Police in Dwarka. The Election Commission of India has established India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management campus in Dwarka. The National Highways Authority of India headquarters, an autonomous agency of the Government of India, set up in 1988 is located in Dwarka.
The Ministry of External Affairs owns the MEA Housing Complex in Dwarka, for the housing of its officials and diplomats. The Government of Delhi has approved the construction of Indira Gandhi Hospital, a super-specialty hospital in Dwarka, which will cost ₹850 crore (US$100 million) and will be spread over 24 acres, to be operational from the year 2020. [18] The Punjab National Bank opened its new corporate head office in Dwarka in 2018.
In 2020, Manipur Bhavan is being built in Dwarka by Government of Manipur. [19] In 2021, as per media reports Government of Bihar built Bihar Sadan in Dwarka.
It is part of the Dwarka, Delhi Assembly constituency. Vinay Mishra of Aam Aadmi Party is the MLA since 2015.
A study published in Nature scientific report [20] reports that land is sinking down in Delhi due to groundwater overpumping.
Delhi Development Authority is currently planning to establish Bharat Vandana Park, [21] to be spread over 220 acres in sector 20. [22]
Dwarka is home to a sports complex (DDA Sports Complex) in Sector 11 with facilities such as Tennis (Clay & Hard Courts), Badminton including covered Badminton Hall, Table Tennis, Billiards / Snooker / Pool, Basket Ball, Volleyball, Jogging Track, Cricket, Cricket Practice Pitches, Multigym, Skating, Snack - Bar, Pro - Shop, Tennis Practice wall, Squash, Children Park, Yoga, Karate, Swimming Pool with Toddler Pool. The Delhi Development Authority is planning to create an 18-hole state-of-the-art golf course over an area of 173 acres in Sector 24. [23] [24] [25] [26]
Currently, the Dwarka Sub-City (Sector 1 to 29) is divided into 5 MCD Wards: 135 - Kakraula, 136 - Matiala, 141 - Bijwasan, 145 - Palam, and 147 - Mahavir Enclave. Dwarka is divided into three Assembly Constituencies i.e. AC-34 Matiala, AC-36 Bijwasan, AC-37 Palam. It is also divided into two Parliamentary constituencies i.e. West Delhi and South Delhi. The area of Dwarka Sub-city as per DDA records is 5648 Hectares. The population density is around 160–200 per H A. Road length in Dwarka is 396 km.
The irregularity in transportation of garbage [27] and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation failing to clean Dwarka, [28] has recently caused the sub-city to face a severe sanitation crisis. [27] The Delhi High Court has been looking into the issue of lack of sanitation and cleaning in Dwarka since 2014. [29] [30] Civic agencies such as DDA and the municipal corporation have blamed Dwarka filth on ‘lack of civic sense’. [31]
In February 2020, Delhi High Court directed South Delhi Municipal Corporation and DDA to provide a healthy and safe environment to residents of the sub-city. [32]
Two new police districts were proposed in 2016 to increase security. [33] Dwarka sub-city, which earlier came under one police station, has been now split up between three police stations – Dwarka North, Dwarka South and Dwarka West.
Dwarka sub-city is emerging as a cultural hub of southwest Delhi. There are different music and dance clubs present. Shopping centres have come up in the five-star hotels and another one next to Sector 12 metro station which hosts few eateries and places to hang out.
In 2019, Vegas Mall, a commercial complex was inaugurated. It consists of a shopping mall, movie theatre, corporate offices and various restaurants spread over an area of 7 acres. The architecture of Vegas Mall was designed by Bentel Associates International, Johannesburg, SA. [34]
In 2018, Pacific India was selected to develop a ₹1 billion (US$12 million) shopping mall and multi-level car parking at the Dwarka Sector 21 metro station. [35]
DDA has implemented a unique concept of Mixed Land Use (MLU) in Dwarka. Most of the DDA housing clusters in Dwarka have commercial buildings nearby. In many sectors, approximately 80% of a plot is used for residential flats and the remaining 20% for commercial use. This unique MLU concept is convenient for the occupants of Dwarka DDA flats, as they get the facility of shopping, dining and purchasing groceries nearby.[ citation needed ]
The sub-city has been planned for an environment of convenience containing essential facilities and services at different levels - mainly health, education, hotel, safety and security, cultural, and communication etc. Two malls recently opened one at the Dwarka Sector 21 Metro Station and another near the Dwarka Sector 14 metro station. [36]
The sub-city is well-equipped with multiple elementary and higher secondary schools.
Faculty of Law, University of Delhi is planning a new campus in Dwarka and will build hostels for students and residential quarters for staff members. [37]
National Law University, Delhi and Netaji Subhas University of Technology are located in Dwarka. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has its main campus in Dwarka Sector 16-C, housing the University School of Law and Legal Studies and University School of Management Studies, among others. The university has around 120 affiliated colleges in the NCR.
Engineering and law institutes in Dwarka include Bhaskaracahrya College of Applied Sciences, University School of Chemical Technology, (GGSIPU) University School of Information, Communication and Technology (GGSIPU), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, [38] [39] Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, and National Law University, Delhi.
Indira Gandhi International Airport is the primary international airport serving New Delhi, the capital of India, and the National Capital Region (NCR). The airport, spread over an area of 5,106 acres (2,066 ha), is situated in Palam, Delhi, 15 km (9.3 mi) southwest of the New Delhi Railway Station and 16 km (9.9 mi) from New Delhi city centre.
Chanakyapuri is a neighbourhood and diplomatic enclave established in the 1950s in New Delhi, India. It is also a sub-division of the New Delhi district and plays host to the majority of foreign embassies in New Delhi. Chanakyapuri, meaning "city of Chanakya", is named after Chanakya, an ancient Indian diplomat, philosopher, politician, military strategist and advisor to Maurya Emperor Chandragupta Maurya.
Vasant Kunj is a neighbourhood located in South West Delhi district, Delhi, India. The area is home to several businessmen, actors, cricketers and the former prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh. It is located close to Indira Gandhi International Airport and the commercial hub of Gurgaon. In the early '90s, Vasant Kunj was the agriculture-based land of Kishangarh Village. It has many residential areas under military as Ruchi Vihar and Tarapore Enclave.
Saket is a residential colony and the administrative headquarters of the South Delhi district of Delhi in India. The neighborhood is named after the city of Ayodhya, also known as Saket, an ancient, religiously significant city in Uttar Pradesh.
Rajouri Garden is a market and residential neighbourhood in South-West Delhi, India. The Main Market and Nehru Market are the key markets of the area. The population is largely Punjabi who migrated to Delhi, following the Partition of India, from Pakistan in 1947. The postal code of Rajouri Garden is 110027.
The Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE) or Kundli–Manesar–Palwal Expressway, is an operational 6-lane, 135.6 km (84.3 mi)-long Expressway in the Haryana state of India. Along with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, the Western Peripheral Expressway is expected to divert more than 50,000 heavy vehicles away from Delhi, which will help to maintain good air quality in Delhi. Western Peripheral Expressway along with Eastern Peripheral Expressway completes the largest Ring Road around Delhi. There are 10 tolled entries and exits, from north to south - Kundli, Kharkhoda, Bahadurgarh, Badli, Fartukhnagar, Panchgaon, Manesar, Taoru, Sohna & Palwal. Toll rate notified in December 2018 is INR1.35 per km for cars, INR2.18 per km for light motor vehicles, INR4.98 per km for trucks and buses, and two wheelers are not permitted on the expressway.
Dashrath Puri is a small colony consisting of around 1000 houses situated on Dabri-Palam road in South West Delhi, India. Currently this colony comes under Dwarka and West Delhi . Dhool Siras or Dhul Siras is located in Dwarka Sector 24, Delhi Sub-City in South-West Delhi. Dhool Siras is an urbanised village as per Delhi government's notification u/s 507.Originally it is a Jat village of Udar, Godara, Dabas, Nimbekar and Khanganwal, Kalia, Prajapati and Haritas Gotra. It is bounded by Dwarka Sector 25 in the East, Village Chawla in the west, Dwarka sector 19 in the North and Dwarka sector 28 Bamnoli Village in South.
The Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station, located on the Blue Line and Airport Express Line of the Delhi Metro, serves as a major metro and multimodal interchange hub. It is situated near the Dwarka ISBT to the west and the Bijwasan railway station of the Indian Railways network to the east. It served as the terminal station for the Airport Express Line from its opening until 16 September 2023, when Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 became the new terminal.

The Delhi Aerocity metro station is located on the Delhi Airport Express Line of the Delhi Metro. This station is located near the National Highway 8. While the Airport Express Line was opened on 23 February 2011, this station was not opened to the public until Independence Day, Monday 15 August 2011, to allow a buildup of demand.
The Delhi Metro is a rapid transit system that serves Delhi and the adjoining satellite cities of Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida, Bahadurgarh, and Ballabhgarh in the National Capital Region of India. The system consists of 10 colour-coded lines serving 256 stations, with a total length of 350.42 kilometres (217.74 mi). It is India's largest and busiest metro rail system and the second-oldest, after the Kolkata Metro. The metro has a mix of underground, at-grade, and elevated stations using broad-gauge and standard-gauge tracks. The metro makes over 4,300 trips daily.
NH 248-BB, commonly known as Dwarka Expressway is a 27.6 km (17.1 mi) long, under construction, 8-lane (elevated) and 8-lane, total 16-lane elevated grade separated expressway connecting Dwarka in Delhi to Kherki Daula Toll Plaza, Gurgaon in Haryana. The expressway takes off from km 20 milestone of NH 48 at Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur in Delhi and terminate at km 40 of NH 48 near Kherki Daula Toll Plaza in Gurgaon in Haryana. The Dwarka Expressway has been planned as an alternate road link between Delhi and Gurgaon, and is expected to ease the traffic situation on the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway.
Palam is a major residential colony located in Dwarka, South West Delhi. It is one of 70 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the Delhi National Capital Territory in northern India.
The DDA International Sports Complex is a proposed sporting complex which will be based in Dwarka, Delhi. Being planned by the Delhi Development Authority, the complex will house an 18,000 seater international football stadium, an athletic stadium, as well as a Gymkhana and outdoor sports complex.

Urban Extension Road-II or NH-344M is an upcoming 75.7 km long, 6 lanes & 6 lanes wide grade separated expressway in Delhi NCR, India. It would start from National Highway 44 at Alipur then passes from Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka and end at Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway on National Highway 48 near Mahipalpur. Its main route forms a semicircle on the western side of Delhi, additionally it has two side spurs - one from Bawana in Northwest Delhi to Sonipat in Bawana's North and second in west Delhi from between Tikri border & Najafgarh to NH9 Bahadurgarh south bypass. Delhi NCT has 4 concentric ring roads around it - namely Inner Ring Road; Outer Ring Road; third ring outside it formed by the combination of UER-II & Chilla-Okhla Expressway, and fourth ring formed by the combination of part of Dwarka Expressway & Gurugaon-Ghata Expressway, Gurgaon-Sohna Elevated Corridor Expressway, Sohna-Faridabad section of Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Faridabad–Noida–Ghaziabad Expressway (FNG), Ghaziabad-Narela Expressway (planned) and Rai-Narela-Bahadurgarh-Gurgaon Expressway. Outside these ring roads, NCR region will have 3 Regional Circular Expressways and 3 Zonal Circular Expressways (ZCE).
