Malviya Nagar is a residential locality in South Delhi with property prices over 17,000 per sqft. Situated between Saket and Hauz Khas and close to IIT Delhi, its namesake is the freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya. [1]

Malviya Nagar was initially populated in the 1950s by refugees from Pakistan, after the Partition of India. [2] A large portion of the population were ethnic Rajasthani, U.P., Haryanvi, Punjabis and Sindhis, as well as Afghan refugees who were displaced during the Soviet–Afghan War in 1971. [3]

Today, Malviya Nagar is bounded by Panchsheel Enclave in the north, Sheikh Sarai in the east, Saket in the south and Sarvapriya Vihar in the west. Enclaves that are part of Malviya Nagar include Geetanjali Enclave, Bhavishya Nidhi Enclave, Begumpur, Shivalik colony, Sarvodaya Enclave, MMTC Colony and Adchini.

It is serviced by the Malviya Nagar station located on the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro. [4] Malviya Nagar is also home to Delhi Police's Training School. [5]

Malviya Nagar has two major commercial shopping areas and markets and a speciality hospital. Two of India's biggest and posh malls — Select Citywalk and DLF Avenue (Known as DLF Place earlier) — are located in the neighbourhood. There are several neighbourhood parks that are popular jogging and running areas. A number of monuments from the era of the Delhi Sultanate are located in Malviya Nagar. This includes the tomb of Sufi saint Sheikh Yusuf Qattal who lived during the reign of Ibrahim Lodhi and died in 1526-27. [6]

Malviya Nagar main market houses several nationalised and public sector banks and ATMs including Axis Bank, Syndicate Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Canara Bank, Vijaya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Central Bank of India, Citibank, South Indian Bank, Andhra Bank, IDBI Bank, Indian Bank. Some of the foreign banks are Standard Chartered Bank and Deutsche Bank.

Transportation

Malviya Nagar is bordered by two major New Delhi thoroughfares; Sri Aurobindo Marg, which is a primary route connecting Connaught Place and Central Delhi to Gurgaon, and the Outer Ring Road. Malviya Nagar is connected by other parts of New Delhi by Delhi Bus Rapid Transit System bus lines. The bus fare ranges from ₹ 5.00 to ₹ 15.00. The buses connecting Malviya Nagar are:

Autorickshaws and taxis are also available for public transportation. There is an auto-rickshaw stand is at the Main Market and the roundabout near Shivalik Gate (which is also the Bus Depot). Saket is a nearby neighbourhood.

The Delhi Metro Yellow Line to Gurgaon is functional and has a station at Malviya Nagar. [7]

Politics

In the SDMC, Malviya Nagar (ward 63S) is represented by BJP's Nandani Sharma. [8]

Malviya Nagar is a constituency of the Delhi Assembly. Since 2013, the sitting Member of the Assembly has been Somnath Bharti of the Aam Aadmi Party. [9]

Malviya Nagar is part of the New Delhi (Lok Sabha constituency) currently represented by Member of Parliament Meenakshi Lekhi of BJP. [10]

Malviya Nagar is also the former residence of Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, where he lives for 3 months each year during winter in Jammu and Kashmir. [11]

Yusuf Sarai is a locality in South Delhi. It lies on the Sri Aurobindo Marg close to AIIMS, New Delhi, and accommodates both residential as well as market places. It is named after historic Yusuf Sarai, one of many sarais which were built in area during and Delhi Sultanate period, including, Katwaria Sarai, Lado Sarai, Sheikh Sarai and Kallu Sarai.

Hauz Khas is a neighborhood in South Delhi, its heart being the historic Hauz Khas Complex. Well known in medieval times, the Hauz Khas village has amazing buildings built around the reservoir. There are remnants of Islamic architecture roughly colored by splotches of urban culture. It is centrally located and offers both rural Hauz Khas Village and urban Hauz Khas Enclave, Market environments. Hauz Khas is surrounded by Green Park, SDA to the west, Gulmohar Park towards the north, Sarvapriya Vihar towards the south and Asiad Village and Siri Fort to the east.

Green Park is an upscale affluent neighborhood in South Delhi, India. The locality is divided into two parts i.e. Main and Extension. The neighbourhood registered a 4.4% growth in residential sales and was featured alongside Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Vasant Vihar and Anand Niketan in the 2019 edition of Knight Frank's quarterly report on prime luxury residential properties in various megacities around the globe. Property rates have always been high in this colony due to the numerous facilities available. Builder floors and independent villas cost anywhere between INR 6–70 crores in this colony. Rental rates are also very high making this residential area among the most expensive pin codes of New Delhi.

Gulmohar Park is a neighbourhood in South Delhi. This park lies between Hauz Khas and Gautam Nagar and is named after the red-flowered Gulmohar trees growing inside. The nearby residential colony is known as Gulmohar Park Journalists' Colony or simply Gulmohar Park for short, and was established by a group of journalists in the 1970s and is today home to business people, senior lawyers and cine star Amitabh Bachchan's Delhi residence.

Gulmohar Enclave is a posh neighborhood in South Delhi. It is adjacent to Gulmohar Park. It is a colony of 300 apartments and was constructed in 1983 by the Delhi Development Authority. It is now owned by the residents.

The Hauz Khas metro station is an interchange station between the Yellow Line and the Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro. It serves Hauz Khas Enclave, Sarvapriya Vihar, Vijay Mandal Enclave, RBI colony, Mayfair Gardens and the IIT Delhi. The entrance to the station is located on Outer Ring Road, to the east of Aurobindo Marg and to the west of Khelgaon Marg.

Jangpura is a neighbourhood in South East Delhi district of Delhi. Beginning from the east and moving clockwise, it is bordered by the Mathura Road, Ring Railway line, Silver Oak Park beyond the Defence Colony Flyover, and the Barapulla Nullah. It encompasses the residential areas of Jangpura A and B on either side of the Mathura Road, Jangpura (Bhogal) extending west from the Mathura Road until Jangpura Extension, which in turn extends along the northern side of the Ring Railway line to the east side of the Defence Colony Flyover on Josip Broz Tito Marg. The small colony of Pant Nagar along the Barapulla Nullah is contiguous with Jangpura Extension.
