South East Delhi is an administrative district of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India.
This district was carved out in 2012 along with Shahdara, taking the total number to 11 administrative districts in Delhi. [5]
The South East Delhi district is bordered in west by South Delhi district, in south by the Faridabad district of Haryana, in east by River Yamuna, and by New Delhi district and East Delhi district in north-west and north-east respectively.
The district stretches from Jor Bagh, Lodhi Road, Khan Market, Sunder Nagar, Nizamuddin East, Nizamuddin West, Sarai Kale Khan, through Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Ashram, Ashram chowk,New Friends Colony, Nehru Place, Kalkaji, Chittaranjan Park, Govindpuri, Greater Kailash, Alaknanda to Jamia Nagar, Okhla, Sarita Vihar, Jaitpur,Badarpur and Badarpur border.
Administratively, the district is divided into three subdivisions, Defence Colony, Kalkaji and Sarita Vihar. [1] Defence Colony is the administrative headquarters of the district.
Since the district was created after the latest Census of India was completed in 2011, independent statistics for South East Delhi is not available yet.
Many renowned markets of Delhi such as Nehru Place, Lajpat Nagar, and New Friends Colony Market, as well as malls such as Select Citywalk, and The Great India Place, are located in South East Delhi. These areas are key commercial hubs, attracting shoppers and businesses alike with their diverse offerings and modern amenities.
South East Delhi is considered to be one of the most affluent residential districts of Delhi, other than the districts falling under Lutyen's Delhi, viz. New Delhi and Central Delhi. With upscale areas like New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh, Friends Colony, Defence Colony, and Sarita Vihar, it has one of the highest land prices in Delhi. Urban villages in South East Delhi, like Jamia Nagar and Okhla, have become hubs for designer boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries and design studios. [6] [7]
Nehru Place is a large commercial centre in Delhi, India. Although its importance as a financial centre has declined in recent years, Nehru Place is still a prominent commercial area in South Delhi and houses the headquarters of several Indian firms and rivals with other financial centres in the metropolis like Connaught Place, Bhikaji Cama Place and Rajendra Place.
The Mudrika Seva is one of the most popular bus routes in Delhi, India. It was started by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) in May 1974, and is now operated by both the Corporation and DIMTS' cluster buses. The service runs on Delhi's inner ring road, with major stops at AIIMS, Lajpat Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, ITO, Delhi Gate, Kashmere Gate, DU North Campus, Model Town, Azadpur market, Shalimar Bagh, Punjabi Bagh, Britannia Factory, Rajouri Garden, Naraina, and DU South Campus.
Lajpat Nagar is a residential and commercial neighborhood in the South East Delhi district of Delhi. It was named in honor of Lala Lajpat Rai and is today most known for the Lajpat Nagar Central Market. This area is not to be confused with the Lajpat Nagar in Ghaziabad in the NCR region.
Ramakrishna Puram popularly known as R.K. Puram, is a residential colony in Delhi. Named after the saint Sri Ramakrishna, it houses many high-profile corporate houses.
The Inner Ring Road refers to one of the two main ring roads, the main inner one and an outer one in Delhi, India. The two ring roads have a combined length of 87 km (54 mi). Shaheen Bagh is a neighbourhood in the South Delhi district of Delhi, India. It is on the U.P border and southernmost colony of the Okhla area, situated along the banks of the Yamuna. The locality is known for being the site of gathering for the protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR). Shaheen Bagh is recognized as one of the areas in Delhi with a significant Muslim population.
Sarita Vihar is a residential colony situated in South East Delhi, National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. It is near the Kalindi Kunj- Noida Toll bridge or GD Birla Marg-Road 13A which connects the district to Noida.The area is situated close to Uttar pradesh border. It is believed that the site was primarily chosen as the construction site for the Games Village of the 1982 Asian Games, however on the insistence of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the plan was changed to convert it into an upscale residential housing locality. In 2013, it was awarded the "Greenest Colony in Delhi" tag by the then Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit, credited to the efforts of its RWA members who have aggressively worked towards improving the state of parks and green spots in the locality.
The Hauz Khas metro station is an interchange station between the Yellow Line and the Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro. It serves Hauz Khas Enclave, Sarvapriya Vihar, Vijay Mandal Enclave, RBI colony, Mayfair Gardens and the IIT Delhi. The entrance to the station is located on Outer Ring Road, to the east of Aurobindo Marg and to the west of Khelgaon Marg.
Lajpat Nagar is an interchange station between Violet Line and Pink Line of the Delhi Metro in Delhi. It is located between Jangpura and Moolchand on the Violet Line in Lajpat Nagar. The station was opened with the first section of the Violet Line on 3 October 2010, in time for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on the same day. It became an interchange station with the opening of the Pink Line on 6 August 2018. The station on the Pink Line is underground, whereas the Violet line station is elevated. However, both the lines are seamlessly connected, without commuters having to exit the ticketed area to interchange from one line to another.
Jangpura is a neighbourhood in South East Delhi district of Delhi. Beginning from the east and moving clockwise, it is bordered by the Mathura Road, Ring Railway line, Silver Oak Park beyond the Defence Colony Flyover, and the Barapulla Nullah. It encompasses the residential areas of Jangpura A and B on either side of the Mathura Road, Jangpura (Bhogal) extending west from the Mathura Road until Jangpura Extension, which in turn extends along the northern side of the Ring Railway line to the east side of the Defence Colony Flyover on Josip Broz Tito Marg. The small colony of Pant Nagar along the Barapulla Nullah is contiguous with Jangpura Extension.
Badarpur is a historical town situated in the South East Delhi district of National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. The Pink Line is a metro rail line of the Delhi Metro, a rapid transit system in Delhi, India. It consists of 38 metro stations from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar, both in North Delhi.
Okhla Vihar is a new settlement in Okhla, in the district of South East Delhi, India. It consists of many lanes (roads) and many sub-lanes (sub-roads). Over 80% of the area of Okhla Vihar is covered with 5-story apartments. The area consists of three mosques and a church. Amanatullah Khan is the local M.L.A from AAP.
Madanpur Khadar is an urban village in South East district of Delhi. It is located on Delhi-UP Border and is named after Thakur Madan Singh Chauhan. The term Khadar is attached to the village’s name because it is situated on the banks of Yamuna river. It was declared as an urban village by the administrative authorities under Delhi Metropolitan Council in 1966.
