"Walking on a Dream" is a song by Australian electronic music duo Empire of the Sun,released on 30 August 2008 as the lead single from their debut studio album of the same name (2008). The track was co-written by band members,Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore with Jonathan "Donnie" Sloan. The full Sam La More remix was made available as a free download on the band's official website.
On the Australian ARIA Charts,it reached number ten, [2] and was certified double platinum to indicate shipment of over 140,000 units. [3] It was listed at number four in the 2008 Triple J Hottest 100 popularity poll. "Walking on a Dream" won the category for Single of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 2009, [4] and,in the following year,it won Dance Work of the Year at the APRA Awards. [5] [6] Although the single was originally due for release in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2009,the date was postponed until 6 July. [7] In Europe,it reached number eight in both Belgium and Ireland; [8] [9] and peaked in the top 100 on the UK Singles Chart. [10] The song was made the Single of the Week on the iTunes Store for the week of 21 April 2009. The song was also featured in the 2012 racing video game Forza Horizon and later in the 2016 Honda Civic "The Dreamer" commercial,which helped revive the song in the charts,with the song debuting on the US Billboard Hot 100 after more than seven years of release,peaking at number 65. Luke Steele (of The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (of Pnau) formed Empire of the Sun as an electronic duo in 2007. Their debut release,"Walking on a Dream",appeared as a single on 30 August 2008 ahead of the album of the same name on 3 October. [12] Steele had assisted on tracks,"With You Forever" and "Freedom",for Pnau's self-titled album,which was issued in December 2007. As Empire of the Sun,the duo recorded material for Walking on a Dream,including the title track,at Soundworks Music Studio and Linear Recording in Sydney during various sessions throughout the latter part of that year. [13] The track was co-written by Littlemore and Steele with Jonathan Sloan. [14] [15] Sloan also co-produced the album with the duo and Littlemore's bandmate,Peter Mayes of Pnau. [16] [17]
Sam Littlemore (Nick's older brother) aka Sam La More remixed the track,which was made available as a free download on the album's official website until December 2008. [18]
The song is composed in the key of A♭major,with a tempo of 127 bpm. [19]
The song was in a Honda Civic commercial in the U.S. in 2016,more than seven years after its original release. This led the song to finally chart in the country,making it their first Alternative Songs hit there. [20] On May 14,2016,the re-released single reached number one on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart,seven years after having peaked at number 18 in its first chart run. [21] [22]
The music video for the song was shot by Josh Logue on location along the Bund in Shanghai,China,in July–August 2008,just prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. [23] It features Steele and Littlemore wearing Eastern costumes and makeup,inspired by Peking Opera.

Pnau is an Australian dance music trio originating from Sydney. The trio, a duo before 2016, consists of the musicians Nick Littlemore, Peter Mayes and Sam Littlemore (production), with the latter joining in 2016. Pnau first gained recognition through their 1999 debut album Sambanova, which later won an ARIA Music Awards for Best Dance Release. Their third album, Pnau (2007), brought them further critical acclaim and success. Pnau is also recognised for a heavily publicised apprenticeship under the musician Elton John, who signed the duo after listening to the Pnau album. Several of Pnau's later projects have had John's involvement, such as the album Soft Universe and an album of Pnau recreations of Elton John's hits called Good Morning to the Night.
Nicholas George Littlemore is an Australian musician, record producer, singer, songwriter and tour manager. As a musician, he is the frontman of the electronic project Pnau, an ex-member of the art-rock band Teenager and one part of the electro pop-duo Empire of the Sun. As a record producer, he has worked with Elton John, Lover Lover, Groove Armada and Mika. From late 2009, Littlemore had worked with the Cirque Du Soleil as a composer and musical director for the touring arena show Zarkana, which debuted on 29 June 2011. His older brother Sam La More is also a musician and record producer. In 2019, he and Peter Mayes launched the label Lab78.
Hilltop Hoods is an Australian hip hop group that formed in 1996 in Blackwood, Adelaide, South Australia. They are regarded as pioneers of the "larrikin-like" style of Australian hip hop. The group was founded by Suffa and Pressure, who were joined by DJ Debris after fellow founder, DJ Next, left in 1999. The group released its first extended play, Back Once Again, in 1997 and have subsequently released eight studio albums, two "restrung" albums and three DVDs.
Bliss n Eso are an Australian hip hop trio based in Sydney. The group consists of emcees Bliss and Eso, and DJ Izm, and they are currently signed to Melbourne record label Illusive Sounds, and are managed and booked by label co-founders Adam Jankie and Matt Gudinski. Bliss n Eso have released seven studio albums which include three number 1 debuts on the ARIA Charts. They have also won two ARIA Awards for Best Urban Release for their 2008 album Flying Colours and for Best Music Video for their 2017 single "Moments". Eso, under his alias Esoterik, released an album entitled "My Astral Plane" in May 2018.

The Potbelleez are a three-member Irish-Australian electro-house and dance music group, which formed in 2003 as a duo by DJs Dave Goode and Jonny Sonic. It was recorded and mixed by Peter Mayes at Soundworks Music Studio in Sydney at various times throughout 2007, with additional recording by Chris Vallejo at Linear Recording, also in Sydney. In 2010, the song “Half Mast” was sampled on rapper Mac Miller’s song “The Spins”, which was featured on his breakout mixtape K.I.D.S..

The Temper Trap are an Australian indie rock band formed in 2005 by Dougy Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne, and Toby Dundas. In 2008, the group relocated from Melbourne to London. The band released their debut album Conditions in June 2009 to favourable reviews and commercial success; it peaked at No. 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart and into the top 30 on the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single, "Sweet Disposition", peaked in the top 10 on the Belgian, Irish and UK Singles Charts and reached No. 14 on the ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 in November, The Temper Trap won Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single for "Sweet Disposition". The album won the band Best Rock Album, and they also won Best Group at the 2012 ARIA Awards. In October 2013 guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto left the band, during the recording of the third album.

Boy & Bear are an Australian indie folk band formed in 2009, consisting of David Hosking, Killian Gavin, Tim Hart, Jonathan Hart, and David Symes (bass). The band has released two EPs and five studio albums. The first two albums, Moonfire and Harlequin Dream, reached the top ten of the Australian albums chart. Their third album, Limit of Love, was released on 9 October 2015, in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada, and on 30 October in the UK and Europe. On 27 September 2019, after a four-year break, they released their long-awaited fourth studio album, Suck on Light. After yet another break between 2020 and 2022 due to the COVID pandemic, the band finally released their self-titled fifth studio album on 26 May 2023.
