Westover is an affluent section of Stamford, Connecticut, United States. With a median household income of $186,607, it is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city, along with Shippan Point and North Stamford. [1] The neighborhood is bordered by Mianus River State Park to the west, the Merritt Parkway to the north, Stillwater Road to the east, and Palmer Hill Road to the south.

The neighborhood contains a mix of pre-war estates and large homes, [2] [3] as well as more modest homes.

History

During the Revolutionary War, Fort Stamford was constructed in what is now Westover to aid in the defense of Connecticut from loyalist raids. At its peak, the fort was home to 800 soldiers. During the February 26, 1779 raid on Greenwich by William Tryon, General Israel Putnam rode to Fort Stamford to rally reinforcements. Troops from the fort successfully defended Stamford in a battle near Palmer's Hill and the Mianus River at the southern end of the neighborhood. [4] In later years, residents of the neighborhood began referring to Fort Stamford as "Fort Nonsense." [5]

Westover was originally home to several large estates, such as the Treetops Estate of Libby Holman, the Goodbody Estate of the Goodbody family, and the Fortland Farm estate of the Ogden family. [6]

Westover Road was converted from a dirt road to a Macadam road in 1915. [7]

Landmarks

Westover is the home of Fort Stamford, a Revolutionary War era fortification. The Fort Stamford site also includes the Goodbody Garden, an Italianate formal garden from the former Goodbody Mansion which stood on the site until 1970s. [8] The neighborhood is home to the Treetops Estate of actress and torch singer Libby Holman.

Mianus, formerly Mayamus and Upper Landing, is a neighborhood in the town of Greenwich in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Unlike other Greenwich neighborhoods such as Cos Cob or Old Greenwich, Mianus does not have its own ZIP code or post office. Mianus lies partly in the Cos Cob ZIP code, partly in the Riverside ZIP code area, and partly in the Old Greenwich ZIP code area. It lies at an elevation of 23 feet and is home to an elementary school. Mianus was also home to the Mianus Motor Works, a marine-engine manufacturer.

Mianus River

The Mianus River is a 20.3-mile-long (32.7 km) river in Westchester County, New York, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, in the United States. It begins in the town of North Castle, New York in a series of ponds at about 600 feet (180 m) altitude. Flowing northeast into the town of Bedford, it abruptly turns south and passes through the Mianus River Gorge, a nature preserve, before entering Stamford, Connecticut, where it is dammed into the Mianus Reservoir, officially known as the Samuel J. Bargh Reservoir of the Greenwich Water Company. From there, it flows south through Stamford and Greenwich into Long Island Sound, at sea level.

Glenbrook (Stamford)

The West Side of Stamford is the area immediately west of Downtown Stamford, covering the area north of Interstate 95 between the Greenwich town line and the Rippowam River. Fort Stamford Site United States historic place

The Fort Stamford Site, site of Fort Stamford, is a public park at 900 Westover Road in the Westover neighborhood of Stamford, Connecticut. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It is the site of the archaeological remnants of a military earthworks erected during the American Revolutionary War. The fort's location gave a clear view of the Mianus River and Long Island Sound.

Noroton River

The Noroton River is a 9.4-mile-long (15.1 km) stream flowing into Holly Pond and forming most of the border between Stamford and Darien, Connecticut, United States. The river's headwaters are in New Canaan, Connecticut. It is the largest flowing body of water between Mill River/Rippowam River to the west and Five Mile River to the east, although Stony Brook and the Goodwives River in Darien are not much smaller.

Treetops (state park) Ormer estate of singer and actress Libby Holman

Treetops is the former estate of torch singer and actress Libby Holman. It forms the southernmost part of Mianus River Park and is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection as the Mianus River State Park.
