Aurora concert chronology |
The What Happened to the Earth? is the ongoing sixth concert tour and fifth world tour by Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora, in support of her fifth studio album What Happened to the Heart? (2024). The tour started on June 26, 2024, at the National Stadium in Dublin, and will conclude on August 16, 2025, at the Steinberggasse Street in Winterthur, spanning over 70 shows through Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia and Australia.
The European and also first leg of the tour was announced alongside the album on 28 March 2024; [2] general sale for the leg started on 5 April; people who pre-ordered the album received an exclusive ticket pre-sale link for two days in advance. [3] [4]
The second announced part of the tour, with dates throughout North America, was revealed on Aurora's social media accounts and official website on 14 May. [5]
Latin American dates for the tour were announced on 27 May. [6] [7] It marked the first time Aurora had booked an entire tour leg in large venues.
Australian and Japanese dates were announced on 13 and 21 August, respectively. [8] [9] Dates for Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong were announced on 22 October, [10] followed by China dates on 16 December; [11] general tickets for the latest went on sale on 20 December. [12]
The last leg announced of the tour will also pass through Europe in 2025; [13] general tickets went on sale on 12 June. [14]
On 23 June, Aurora was announced as headliner of Norwegian festivals Piknik i Parken, [15] which takes place in Oslo, and Bergenfest, [16] in Bergen. She will perform on the main stage of both festivals on 13 and 14 June 2025, respectively. [17] [18]
Prior to starting her headlining tour, Aurora made several festival appearances in Europe and Asia to promote her album What Happened to the Heart? . She appeared at Glastonbury in the United Kingdom, where her set was widely praised by critics. [19] [20] [21] The following week, she performed at the Roskilde in Denmark. [22] She also headlined Ravnedalen Live in Norway. [23] Aurora made other appearances including at Sziget in Hungary, [24] Paléo in Switzerland, [25] NOS Alive in Portugal, [26] and Summer Sonic in Japan and Thailand. [27]
The tour was received with rave reviews from critics. Taryn Crowley of The Upcoming pointed Aurora's ability with her audience at the Royal Albert Hall, saying that "the most awe-inspiring aspect of this gig was her ability to get a crowd out of their seats, even when that behaviour is deemed inappropriate for the venue; she never encouraged them to do so, she simply just performed as herself and the audience followed" and that "the Royal Albert Hall saw a crowd like no other". [28]
Writing for Louder Than War , MK Bennett praised Aurora's humor and charisma on stage, stating that "she is a very funny person, her onstage chatter, part nervous tension, part need to explain oneself, is so natural that even as the minutes roll by, everyone listens, knowing there is a punchline coming". [29]
Robert Fröwein of Krone Zeitung described Aurora's show in Vienna as "not just a conventional concert, but always a reminder to take a more active look at yourself and your surroundings" and concluded that "this is one of the reasons why Aurora stands out so clearly from the crowd of pop queens. She always conveys the feeling that this is about more than just a cozy evening with beautiful music". [30]
Maddie Browning of Boston.com described the tour as "an acid trip with angelic vocals and trippy imagery of a moon with blinking human eyes. Purple and green lights floated through the sky like the aurora borealis [...] mysterious and breathtaking like Aksnes' music". [31]
What Happened to the Earth? is a commercial success, marking Aurora's transition from theater shows to large venues. After the initial tour announcement, tickets for London and Paris were completely sold out in 10 minutes. [1] Due to high demand in New York and Brisbane, Aurora has booked a second show at the Beacon Theatre and the Fortitude Music Hall, scheduled for 6 December 2024 and 14 February 2025, respectively. [32] [33]
During the Latin American leg of the tour, Aurora performed the biggest headline show of her career with a sold-out attendance of 18,000 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. [34] [35] According to her tour manager, Nicolas Izzo, there were nearly 40,000 attendees at the 3 shows held in Mexico. [36] On 21 November 2024, it was revealed that over 60,000 people attended the first European leg of the tour. [37]
On October 21, Bergens Tidende stated that Aurora was attracting a large abroad audience to the Norwegian festival Bergenfest, sparking interest from other international artists who are fans of hers to perform on the same day. [38]
Aurora takes the stage with the video intro "The Goddess of Dusk" and follows with the introspective "Churchyard", followed by tracks that balance moments of energy and delicacy, such as "All is Soft Inside" and "Infections of a Different Kind". Classics such as "Runaway" and "Running with the Wolves" are also present, reinforcing the connection with the fans who have been with her since the beginning of her musical journey.
The performances are marked by her ability to create an immersive atmosphere, using her ethereal voice and expressive movements to convey deep emotions.
Musically, the performances strike a balance between the lyrical sensitivity inspired perhaps by her favorite singers Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan without the folk side and the atmospheric soundscape associated with Enya. Aurora explores electronic sounds and cinematic dynamics, possibly influenced by The Chemical Brothers and film scores, creating emotionally engaging performances.
Visually, the shows are a spectacle of light and color that seems to translate her music into visual form. The ethereal aesthetic, with nebulous sets and fluid costumes, evokes the mysticism of artists such as Björk and Enya, highlighting the connection between the natural and the surreal. Every detail, from Aurora's almost ritualistic movements on stage to the lighting that creates a dreamlike effect, transports the audience to a separate universe, reinforcing the emotional and spiritual connection characteristic of her music.
The combination of these sound and visual influences results in an experience that combines introspection and transcendence, leaving the audience deeply moved. [39]
