Winfield Township was established in 1843, and named for Winfield Scott. [4]
The John Ross Farm was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. [5]
According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 25.06 square miles (64.9 km2), of which 24.74 square miles (64.1 km2) (or 98.72%) is land and 0.32 square miles (0.83 km2) (or 1.28%) is water. [3]

Winfield Township, along with Center Township, is served by the Crown Point Community School Corporation which includes Crown Point High School.
Crown Point is a city in and the county seat of Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 33,899 at the 2020 census. The city was incorporated in 1868. On October 31, 1834, Solon Robinson and his family became the first settlers to an area that later became Crown Point. Due to its location, Crown Point is known as the "Hub of Lake County".

The town was incorporated in 1993 in order to keep the residents from being annexed by other neighboring communities. Prior to that time it had been part of Winfield Township as an unincorporated town. Winfield is named for General Winfield Scott.
