The XTAR-EUR is a communication satellite developed by Spain and the United States and in order to provide a secure channel over the Indian Ocean. [1] It was originally operated by XTAR and Hisdesat. [2] In year 2020 Hisdesat bought 100% stake on the satellite. Its launch short after the Spainsat is part of an effort to strengthen Spain's communication ties with allied countries around the globe, particularly in maters of national security (defense, disaster relief...). Body

The satellite is based on the Space Systems/Loral LS-1300 model. Consequently, it is shaped like a box (5.4 x 2.9 x 2.2 m) with a total weight of 1412 kg (3631 kg at launch). The sides of the box contain two retractable solar panels (providing up to 3.6 kW of power) while the lower base (facing anti-radial direction) holds the communication module. This module operates on the X band (compatible with SATCOM systems employed by NATO) [4] and consists of 12 X-band transponders of 72 MHz broadband each (reserving 4 for usage by the Spanish Ministry of Defense while offering the other 8 for potential partners) and a 2.4 diameter antenna. The system allows both RHCP and LHCP polarization while covering an area of 6,3095 m2 RCS (2 global beams from Eastern Brazil and the Atlantic Ocean, across all of Africa and the Middle East to as far east as Singapore, 1 beam across the Mediterranean Sea and 4 steerable beams with the possibility of overlapping). [5] Additional systems provide 3-axis inflight stability. [6]

Launch

The satellite was officially launched the 12th of February 2005 at 21:03 UT on board an Ariane-5 ECA rocket from the Guyana Space Center. [7] [8]

Its orbit is geostationary (GEO) 29º East, around 35,800 km high (35,782.6 km of perigee and 35,803.7 km of apogee) with 0º of inclination, a period of 1,436.1 minutes and a semi-major axis of 42,164 km. [9]

During its operation life, the XTAR-EUR is being monitored from Arganda del Rey and Maspalomas Station. [10] While the operating companies are based on Washington, D.C., Madrid and Palo Alto. [11]

It is expected that the satellite will achieve an operational life exceeding 15 years until its planned decommission in 2023.

XTAR, LLC is a commercial satellite operator exclusively providing services in the X band frequency range, which is the communications cornerstone of today's military, diplomatic, humanitarian and emergency disaster response operations. A privately owned and operated company, XTAR supports the critical satellite communications needs of governments around the world through its two X-band payloads. The XTAR satellites were designed and built by private financing. Loral Space & Communications, Inc. owns the majority share. XTAR is headquartered in Ashburn, VA.

Technology Education Satellite (TechEdSat) is a class of CubeSats built by San Jose State University and University of Idaho students in partnership with NASA's Ames Research Center. These satellites have tested communication technology for smallsats, and have contributed to the development of the Small Payload Quick Return (SPQR) concept.

X band or SHF Satellite Communication is widely used by military forces for beyond line of sight communications. X band is used because it provides a compromise between the characteristics of different frequency bands which is particularly suited to the needs of military users. The characteristics include interference and rain resilience, terminal size, data rates, remote coverage and whether it is reserved for governmental use.

OPTOS Spanish nanosatellite

The Hispasat 1B was a Spanish communications satellite operated by Hispasat. Along with the Hispasat 1A, the satellite covered communications over the American Continent for both civilian and military customers. Together they formed the first European constellation operating over the New World. It's service life ended in 2003.

The Amazonas 5 is a Spanish commercial communications satellite developed by SSL and operated by Hispasat. Launched on September 11, 2017, it has an expected service life of 15 years. Its orbit allows it to cover all of South America, allowing for broadband and broadcast services. It replaces the Amazonas 4A and 4B satellites, the former of which experienced a performance loss and the latter which was cancelled.

Eutelsat 172B is a French communications satellite built by Airbus Defence and Space and operated by Eutelsat Communications. Launched on June 1, 2017, it has an expected service life of 15 years. Its orbit along with Eutelsat 172A allows it to cover the Asia-Pacific region, providing enhanced broadband and broadcast services.

The Hispasat 1D, since 2016 called Hispasat 30W-4 is a Spanish communications satellite launched in 2002 operated by Hispasat. Together with the Hispasat 1C it formed a constellation in order to strengthen communication ties between the American continent and the Iberian Peninsula for both governmental and private uses.
