The 1837 Mississippi gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 1837, to elect the governor of Mississippi. Alexander G. McNutt, a Democrat won against Whig candidate John A. Grimball and States Rights Whig candidate Jacob B. Morgan. [1] [2] A fourth candidate, Democrat Benjamin W. Edwards died during the campaign. [3]

The 1839 Massachusetts gubernatorial election was a tightly contested race won by Marcus Morton. Despite the presence of some irregularities, incumbent Whig Governor Edward Everett refused to contest the results once a legislative committee dominated by his party accepted a report giving Morton 51,034 votes out of 102,066 cast.

The Democrats had to defend an incumbent in Louisiana, while the Republicans had to defend an incumbent in Kentucky plus an open seat in Mississippi. As was common at the time, the Democratic candidate won in a landslide in the general election so therefore the Democratic primary was the real contest, and winning the primary was considered tantamount to election. This election was the first Mississippi gubernatorial election since 1895 that the winner of the gubernatorial election was of the same party as the incumbent president.
