The 1997 NatWest Trophy was the 17th NatWest Trophy. It was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 24 June and 7 September 1997. [1] The tournament was won by Essex County Cricket Club who defeated Warwickshire County Cricket Club by 9 wickets in the final at Lord's.

Format and highlights

The 18 first-class counties, were joined by eleven Minor Counties: Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cumberland, Devon, Herefordshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Shropshire and Staffordshire.

The Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands teams also participated. There was some controversy in the semi-final at the County Ground, Chelmsford, when in a tense contest Mark Ilott of Essex and Robert Croft of Glamorgan had an on-field confrontation. [2]

The final at Lord's which was held on 7 September 1997 and was won by Essex with Stuart Law scoring 80 and collecting the Man of the Match medal.

Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The 1982 NatWest Trophy was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 3 July and 4 September 1982. It was the 2nd NatWest Trophy, after it had been renamed from the Gillette Cup the previous year. The tournament was won by Surrey who defeated Warwickshire by 9 wickets in the final at Lord's.

The 1983 NatWest Trophy was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 29 June and 3 September 1983. The third NatWest Trophy competition, it was won by Somerset who defeated Kent by 24 runs in the final at Lord's.

The 1984 NatWest Trophy was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 4 July and 1 September 1984. The fourth NatWest Trophy tournament, it was won by Middlesex who defeated Kent by 4 wickets in the final at Lord's.

The 1985 NatWest Trophy was the 5th NatWest Trophy. It was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 3 July and 7 September 1985. The tournament was won by Essex who defeated Nottinghamshire by 1 run in the final at Lord's.

The 1998 NatWest Trophy was the 18th NatWest Trophy. It was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 24 June and 5 September 1998. The tournament was won by Lancashire County Cricket Club who defeated Derbyshire County Cricket Club by 9 wickets in the final at Lord's. This was the final version of the tournament to be played with 60 overs per side.

The 2000 NatWest Trophy was the 20th and last NatWest Trophy before being renamed as the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy for the 2001 season. It was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 2 May and 26 August 2000. The tournament was won by Gloucestershire who defeated Warwickshire by 22 runs in the final at Lord's.

The 2001 Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 1 May and 1 September 2001. It was the first Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy following its change of name from the NatWest Trophy, with new sponsors Cheltenham & Gloucester plc. The tournament was won by Somerset who defeated Leicesterhire by 41 runs in the final at Lord's.

The 2002 Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 29 August 2001 and 31 August 2002. It was the second Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy, following its change of name from the NatWest Trophy. The tournament was won by Yorkshire who defeated Somerset by 6 wickets in the final at Lord's.
