On 2 November 2021, a major insurgent attack at the Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan Military Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, killed at least 25 people. [1] [2]

Background

Islamic State began an insurgency in Afghanistan in 2015. They claimed responsibility for a 2017 attack on Daoud Khan hospital. [1] [2]

Attack

On 2 November 2021, bombers and gunmen attacked Daoud Khan Military Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan. A suicide bomber on a motorcycle detonated his explosives at the gate of the hospital followed by four attackers. The attackers stormed the hospital and killed multiple people including Mawlawi Hamdullah Mukhlis leader of the Kabul Corps of the Islamic Army of Afghanistan who was also known as the "Conqueror of Kabul" after he became the first senior Taliban figure to occupy the Afghanistan presidential palace during the August 15, 2021 Taliban takeover of Kabul. [3] [4] [5] The attack was followed by a second more powerful explosion also at the gate. Taliban commando then arrived via helicopter and engaged in a firefight with the Islamic State gunmen leading to the deaths of all the attackers. The attack killed at least 25 people and wounded 50 more. [6] [7] [8]

On 8 March 2017, the Sardar Daud Khan Military Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, was attacked by a group of gunmen, some of them dressed in white hospital robes. Government officials confirmed at least 49 people were killed in the hours-long assault, while 63 others were injured. By March 13 the unconfirmed death toll had surpassed 100, with an unknown number injured. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed to have carried out the attack, but officials suspected the Haqqani network instead.

The Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan National Military Hospital, often referred to as the Daoud Khan Hospital or the National Military Hospital, is a military hospital located in Kabul, Afghanistan. With 400 beds, it is one of the largest military medical facilities in Afghanistan, and prior to 2021 provided medical services to members of the Afghan National Security Forces, and also contains a teaching department. Constructed in 1973 by engineers from the then-Soviet Union, it is now described as the "crown jewel" of the Afghan healthcare industry.

The Islamic State–Taliban conflict is an ongoing insurgency waged by the Islamic State – Khorasan Province (IS-KP) against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The conflict initially began when both operated as rival insurgent groups in Nangarhar; since the formation of the Taliban's state in 2021, IS-KP members have enacted a campaign of terrorism targeting both civilians and assassinating Taliban members using hit-and-run tactics. The group have also caused incidents and attacks across the border in Pakistan.

On 1 July 2019, a combined gun and bomb attack took place in the Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood of Kabul, Afghanistan. The attackers initially detonated a bomb-laden truck, after which five gunmen entered a nearby building under construction and fired on Afghan security personnel evacuating people onto the street. At least forty-five were killed, including the five attackers. The spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, Wahidullah Mayar, said that 116 civilians, including 26 children and 5 women, were wounded. The Taliban claimed the responsibility for the bomb attack in Kabul and said although civilians were not the Taliban target, some were injured.

On 17 August 2019, a suicide bombing took place during a wedding in a wedding hall in Kabul, Afghanistan. At least 92 people were killed in the attack and over 140 injured. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed responsibility for the bombing, stating that the attack targeted the Shi'ites. More than 1,000 people were gathered for the wedding when the attack took place. The attack occurred a day before the 100th Afghan Independence Day, causing the government to postpone the planned celebrations taking place at the Darul Aman Palace. It was the deadliest attack in Kabul since January 2018.

In May 2020, a series of insurgent attacks took place in Afghanistan, starting with the Taliban killing 20 Afghan soldiers and wounded 29 others in Zari, Balkh and Grishk, Helmand on 1 and 3 May, respectively. On 12 May, a hospital's maternity ward in Kabul and a funeral in Kuz Kunar (Khewa), Nangarhar were attacked, resulting in the death of 56 people and injuries of 148 others, including newborn babies, mothers, nurses, and mourners. ISIL–KP claimed responsibility for the funeral bombing, but no insurgent group claimed responsibility for the maternity ward shooting.

On 21 April 2022, a powerful bomb rocked the Shia Seh Dokan mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh Province, Afghanistan, killing at least 31 people and injuring more than 87 others. The Islamic State – Khorasan Province claimed responsibility via Telegram.

On 12 December 2022, insurgents attacked a hotel popular with foreigners in Kabul, Afghanistan. At least 3 civilians were killed and 18 others, including foreigners, were reported to be injured. Islamic State – Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for the attack.
