The 2022 Troy Trojans football team represented Troy University as a member of the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference during the 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Led by first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, the Trojans played home games at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Alabama.
Linebacker Carlton Martial began the 2022 season needing 104 tackles to break the all-time NCAA Division I FBS record for most tackles in a career. [1] [2] On November 12, 2022, he recorded his 546th tackle to break the prior record of 545 tackles set by Tim McGarigle of Northwestern. [3] [4]

It was the fourth edition of the Sun Belt Conference Football Championship Game and determined the champion of the Sun Belt Conference for the 2022 season. The game began at 2:40 p.m. CST on ESPN. The game featured the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, the East Division champions, and the Troy Trojans, the West Division champions. Sponsored by tire company Hercules Tires, the game was officially known as the 2022 Hercules Tires Sun Belt Football Championship.
The 2022 Army Black Knights football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Black Knights were led by ninth-year head coach Jeff Monken and played their home games at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York. They competed as an independent. The Black Knights finished the season with a record of 6–6, beating Navy but losing possession of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy after a loss to Air Force. They were not invited to a bowl as only five of their six wins counted for bowl eligibility, with the sixth coming against their second FCS opponent of the year.

Fifth-year head coach Jamey Chadwell led the team through the regular season and the conference championship game before resigning the become the head football coach at Liberty University. Chad Staggs served as interim head coach for the team's bowl game. Coastal Carolina played home games at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.
