Rankings from AP Poll |
The 2024 American Athletic Conference football season will be the 33rd NCAA Division I FBS Football season of the American Athletic Conference (The American). It will be the 12th season since the former Big East Conference dissolved and became the American Athletic Conference and the 10th season of the College Football Playoff in place. The American is considered a member of the Group of Five (G5) together with Conference USA, the MAC, Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference. The conference will have 14 football members for the 2024–25 season.
During the 2023 American Athletic Conference season, Tulane and SMU posted 8–0 conference records and advanced to the Conference Championship Game. In the Conference Championship Game, SMU defeated Tulane by a score of 26–14. SMU was invited to the Fenway Bowl, where they lost to Boston College by a score of 14–23
Prior to the 2024 season, The American saw the departure of one team and the arrival of another. SMU, the 2023 Conference champions, left The American to join the Atlantic Coast Conference. [1] Army joins The American as a football-only member beginning in 2024 after having played as an independent school in football since 2005. [2] The conference will remain at 14 football members following these moves.
Though Army and Navy will now both be members of The American, the annual Army–Navy Game will be played as a non-conference game to ensure that its traditional date of the second weekend of December will remain. [3]

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football Bowl Subdivision independent schools are four-year institutions whose football programs are not part of an NCAA-affiliated conference. This means that FBS independents are not required to schedule each other for competition like conference schools do.
The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football in the United States. The FBS consists of the largest schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As of the 2024 season, there are 10 conferences and 134 schools in FBS.
Willie Fritz is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at the University of Houston. From 1993 to 1996, he was the head football coach at Blinn College, a junior college in Brenham, Texas, where he led his teams to consecutive NJCAA National Football Championships, in 1995 and 1996.
The American Athletic Conference (AAC), also known as the American, is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States featuring 14 full member universities and eight affiliate member universities that compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Member universities represent a range of private and public research universities of various enrollment sizes located primarily in urban metropolitan areas in the Northeastern, Midwestern, and Southern regions of the United States.
The 2015 American Athletic Conference football season is the 25th NCAA Division I FBS football season of the American Athletic Conference. The season is the third since the breakup of the former Big East Conference, and the second season with the new College Football Playoff in place. Under the playoff system, The American is no longer an Automatic Qualifying conference (AQ), and is considered a member of the "Group of Five" (G5) with Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference, and the Sun Belt Conference. Whereas under the previous system the champion of the conference was guaranteed an automatic berth to a BCS bowl game, now the highest-ranked member of the G5 will receive a bid to one of the six major bowls.
The American Athletic Conference Football Championship Game is a college football game currently held by the American Athletic Conference each year to determine the conference's season champion. The inaugural game was held on December 5, 2015, at 12:00 pm ET.
