AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door is a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event co-promoted by the American promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and the Japanese promotion New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). Established in 2022, it is held annually during the summer and features direct competition between wrestlers from the two promotions. The event takes its name from the same term often used by AEW when referring to working with other professional wrestling companies. The 2024 event also saw involvement of wrestlers from NJPW's sister company World Wonder Ring Stardom and the Mexican promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Forbidden Door was originally held in June but will move to August in 2025.
In February 2021, the American professional wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) started a partnership with the Japanese promotion, New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). [1] Since then, both AEW and NJPW have had their wrestlers appear on each other's shows in the United States. On April 15, 2022, it was reported that a planned co-promoted event held by the two promotions was in the works. [2]
On the April 20, 2022, episode of AEW Dynamite , AEW President Tony Khan introduced NJPW President Takami Ohbari to make a major announcement regarding their respective companies. They were interrupted by AEW wrestler Adam Cole, who officially announced that a co-promoted pay-per-view (PPV) event titled Forbidden Door would be held on June 26, 2022, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. [3] The event took its name from the same term often used by AEW when referring to working with other professional wrestling promotions. [4]
On March 15, 2023, a second Forbidden Door event between AEW and NJPW was scheduled to be held on June 25, 2023, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, thus establishing Forbidden Door as an annual event between the two companies. The event also marked AEW's first PPV held outside of the United States and NJPW's first PPV held in Canada. [5]
On April 11, 2024, the third Forbidden Door was announced to take place on June 30, 2024, at the UBS Arena in the Long Island hamlet of Elmont, New York. [6] This marked the first Forbidden Door event to see involvement from World Wonder Ring Stardom, a women's Japanese promotion recently purchased by NJPW, as well as Mexico's Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), a partner promotion to both AEW and NJPW. In August 2024, advertisements outside Wembley Stadium in London, England were shown days before AEW's All In event, which was held at the venue, advertising that the 2025 Forbidden Door would emanate from London. During All In's Zero Hour pre-show, the 2025 Forbidden Door event was confirmed to be held in London on August 24, 2025, but a venue was not announced. This will mark the first Forbidden Door event held outside of North America, and AEW's fifth event overall outside the continent. [8]

New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) is a Japanese professional wrestling promotion founded on January 13, 1972, by Antonio Inoki, and based in Nakano, Tokyo. It is currently owned by card game company Bushiroad, while TV Asahi and Amuse, Inc. own minority shares of the company. Naoki Sugabayashi has served as the promotion's Chairman since September 2013, while Hiroshi Tanahashi has served as the president of the promotion since December 2023.
William Peter Charles Ospreay is an English professional wrestler. As of November 2023, he is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he is the current AEW International Champion in his second reign. He is also known for his eight year tenure with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he held various championships, including the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
Tautuiaki Taula Koloamatangi, is an American professional wrestler. He is currently signed to WWE. He is best known for his time in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), under the ring name Hikuleo, where he was a member of Bullet Club and Guerrillas of Destiny (GoD). In his tenure with NJPW, he was a former Strong Openweight Champion, a two-time Strong Openweight Tag Team Champion, and a one time IWGP Tag Team Champion with partner El Phantasmo as part of a new incarnation of GoD. He is the nephew and adopted son of professional wrestler Tonga Fifita.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is an American professional wrestling promotion based in Jacksonville, Florida. It is owned by father and son duo Shahid and Tony Khan, with the latter being the president and chief executive officer. It is headquartered at EverBank Stadium, the home of the National Football League's Jacksonville Jaguars, which is also owned by Shahid Khan.
The AEW World Championship is a men's professional wrestling world championship created and promoted by the American promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Unveiled on May 25, 2019, it is the promotion's top championship and is presented as being AEW's most prestigious title. Chris Jericho was the inaugural champion. The current champion is Bryan Danielson, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Swerve Strickland at All In on August 25, 2024.

The 2022 Forbidden Door was the inaugural Forbidden Door professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and supershow co-produced by the American promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and the Japan-based New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). It took place on June 26, 2022, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, and was the first AEW/NJPW co-promoted event. It was the first professional wrestling pay-per-view held at this venue since Spring Stampede in 2000, which was produced by World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

Ana Stephanie Vaquer González is a Chilean professional wrestler. As of July 2024, she is signed to WWE, where she performs on the NXT brand. She is best known for her time with the Mexican wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), where she is a former CMLL World Women's Champion and CMLL World Women's Tag Team Champion with Zeuxis; she was the first luchadora in CMLL history to have held both titles simultaneously and did so until her departure from CMLL in July 2024. She had also wrestled for American promotion All Elite Wrestling and British promotion Revolution Pro Wrestling due to the two organizations' partnerships with CMLL.
The 2023 Forbidden Door was the second annual Forbidden Door professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and supershow co-produced by the American promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and the Japan-based New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). It took place on June 25, 2023, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was AEW's first PPV to be held outside of the United States and NJPW's first traditional PPV to be held in Canada. Forbidden Door was also the first non-WWE PPV event to be held in Toronto in what was formerly known as the "Air Canada Centre" since World Championship Wrestling (WCW)'s Mayhem event on November 21, 1999.
The Strong Women's Championship is a women's professional wrestling world championship owned by the New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) promotion. The creation of the championship was announced by NJPW on April 27, 2023. The title is exclusively featured on NJPW's American internet television program NJPW Strong Live, which features a distinct roster of American and other foreign wrestlers. The inaugural champion was Willow Nightingale, who defeated Mercedes Moné in a tournament final at Resurgence to win the championship. The current champion is Moné, who defeated Stephanie Vaquer in a Winner Takes All match in which Moné's AEW TBS Championship was also on the line at Forbidden Door.
AEW WrestleDream is a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by the American promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Established in 2023, it is held annually in October as a memorial show to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) founder Antonio Inoki; AEW and NJPW have had a working partnership since early 2021. The name of the event is a reference to Inoki, who AEW President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Khan called "wrestling's greatest dreamer".

It will be the second annual WrestleDream and will take place on October 12, 2024, at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. Like with the previous year's event, the show will be held in honor of New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) founder Antonio Inoki, who died on October 1, 2022.
The 2025 Forbidden Door is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and supershow co-produced by the American promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and the Japan-based New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). It will be the fourth annual Forbidden Door event and will take place on August 24, 2025, in London, England, at a to be announced venue, coinciding with the United Kingdom's August Bank Holiday weekend, previously occupied by AEW's All In. This will be the first Forbidden Door to be held in August, as the first three events were all held in June, and it will also be the first held outside of North America.
The term "forbidden door" has always been used in reference to companies working together and not signing exclusively with one company.
