The A.T. & S.F. Roundhouse in Las Vegas, New Mexico, located at the corner of Grande ave. and Prince st. was built in 1917. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. [1]

The First Las Vegas roundhouse would begin construction in August 1879, and finish just one year after the A.T.& S.F. connected to the Las Vegas Terminal. The building, which had a low-style roundhouse design would begin its life with accommodations for at least seven engines in total for storage and general maintenance. In September 1881 just one year after its installation, four additional stalls were added to the roundhouse for carpentry and rolling stock repair. A new 54' turntable was installed. An additional wing on the roundhouse was built large enough to contain nine more engines and between 1897 and 1899, a 60-foot turntable was installed. The roundhouse would ultimately end its days at twenty stalls in total.

Due to the increased size of locomotives, it became necessary for the A.T.& S.F. to rebuild the turntable to 85' in March 1904. Demand for better infrastructure and presumed work increase, the railroad would demolish the original roundhouse in favor of larger work space. The building was destroyed by fire on August 6, 1917, and replaced with a 34 Stall roundhouse with a reinforced concrete structure. This new and improved roundhouse would bill a whopping $200,000 in improvement costs to the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad. Calculated with inflation in 2023, the improvement would cost 5.6 million dollars. The original turntable would remain but would shortly after be upgraded to 100' for even larger engines. This still was not enough, so the WYE track for the Hot Springs lead was used to turn engines around instead, creating a bottleneck for the use of the roundhouse.

It would not be long before news of layoffs and job cuts littered the Las Vegas Optics. Only four years after the 34 Stall roundhouse was built, in 1921, many families who relied on the railroad, would be short of income and seeking other opportunity. At its peak, the roundhouse would have over 380 trainmen working three shifts from boilermakers, car repair, welders, and fabricators. A recent survey done in 2019 by the NRHS states that the building is in a "deteriorated" condition. The building since has offered storage opportunities from alleged turkey farms, wool companies, truck storage, and other agricultural ventures.

When a diesel locomotive is operated as a single unit, the railway company often prefers, or requires, that it be run "front end" first. When operated as part of a multiple unit locomotive consist, the locomotives can be arranged so that the consist can be operated "front end first" no matter which direction the consist is pointed. Turntables were also used to turn observation cars so that their windowed lounge ends faced toward the rear of the train.

Nickel Plate Road 759 is a class "S-2" 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio as a member of the S-2 class for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, commonly referred to as the "Nickel Plate Road". Built as a fast freight locomotive, No. 759 served the Nickel Plate until being retired in 1959 and placed into storage. In 1965, No. 759 was purchased by F. Nelson Blount for display in his Steamtown, U.S.A. collection in North Walpole, New Hampshire. The locomotive was restored to operating condition in 1967 by New York commodity broker Ross Rowland for use in hauling his Golden Spike Centennial Limited, a special commemorative train that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1969. Afterwards, No. 759 pulled numerous excursions for Ross Rowland and Steamtown until being retired once more and placed back on display in 1977. As of 2023, the locomotive remains on static display at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and sibling engine No. 765 continues to operate in mainline excursion service.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot</span>

Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot was a large locomotive depot consisting of two roundhouse buildings and associated facilities constructed by the New South Wales Government Railways adjacent to the marshalling yard on the Main Northern line at Broadmeadow. Construction of the locomotive depot at Broadmeadow commenced in 1923 to replace the existing crowded loco sheds at Woodville Junction at Hamilton, with the depot opening in March 1924. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

Gravel Place is a location within Arlington Heights, Pennsylvania, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of East Stroudsburg. It is neither incorporated nor a census-designated place, but has a name recognized by the USGS. From the 1880s to about 1950, it was a railroad yard of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W) on its mainline from Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey, which served New York City by ferry, to Scranton, Pennsylvania, continuing northwest into New York State with its western terminus in Buffalo, New York. It is just north of present Mill Creek Road.

The Bartlett Roundhouse, also known as the Bartlett Engine House, is a historic railroad service facility in Bartlett, New Hampshire. Located just south of United States Route 302 and east of Pine Street, it consists of a multibay service building and the remains of a 56-foot (17 m) railroad turntable which provide access to the service bays. Built in 1887–88, it is a reminder of the historic importance of the railroad in the local economy. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015, and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2008.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bayshore Cutoff</span> Railway line on the San Francisco Peninsula

The Bayshore Cutoff is the rail line between San Francisco and San Bruno along the eastern shore of the San Francisco Peninsula. It was completed by Southern Pacific (SP) in 1907 at a cost of $7 million, and included five tunnels, four of which are still used by Caltrain, the successor to Southern Pacific's Peninsula Commute service. Fill from the five tunnels was used to build the Visitacion or Bayshore Yard, the main SP classification yard near the city of Brisbane. The Del Monte was similarly rerouted over the line at some point in its operational history.
